Standard size of paper

There are a number of paper size standards used in the world today,
the most commonly used being the international ISO standard and a
standard used in North America. These sizes are used to order
various printed items such as stationery, brochures, digital copies,
fliers, etc. The charts below detail and compare these sizes and their
dimensions.

Paper weight descriptions

Weight from 35-55 GSM Most newspapers 90 GSM in market magazine 130-250

gsm good quality promotional poster 180-250 GSM in market printing magazine

cover 350 GSM Most reasonable quality business cards

Standard paper weights are between 75 GSM and 100 GSM for common business

applications; photo paper is much higher and goes up to 280 GSM in weight
What does GSM paper mean?

• Paper is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). The higher

the GSM, the heavier and thicker the paper. There are varying

weights of GSM paper, meaning you can find the right one for a

number of different applications.

Common types of GSM

 35-55 gsm – The type of paper for newsprint.

 75-90 gsm –for notebooks.
 90-100 gsm –for household printer paper.
 120-140 gsm –posters
 210-300 gsm – This thicker type of paper is for some magazine covers
 350-450 gsm – The highest GSM paper is used for business cards and
invitations
How to measure the thickness of paper

Why measure actual paper thickness?

•If you try to determine paper thickness using other metrics, such as weight, your results will

show variations based on the quality and type of paper. For example, two sheets of paper

weighing 300g could measure in at anywhere between 350 and 500 microns, depending on

the quality of the paper. 1 micron is the equivalent of 1/1000 of a millimeter

Instruments for measuring paper thickness

Measuring paper thickness should be a routine part of any quality control

process for packaging. there are several different ways to do it, including

(Caliper, Thickness gauge, Micrometer, Paper thickness measuring machines

, Digital Micrometer)
Caliper

You can measure paper thickness using a caliper. A sheet of paper or paperboard is inserted

between the caliper’s jaws. The jaws are then tightened and the distance between them is

measured. Digital calipers are capable of displaying the thickness of a single sheet of paper.

Manual calipers are likely to need a bundle of paper and for the result to be divided by the

number of sheets inserted between the jaws.

Thickness gauge

Thickness gauges with a non-rotating spindle are another option. Paper or

corrugated samples are placed within a small, delicate vice and once the
vice is closed, a reading of the thickness is given. This method sometimes
requires multiple sheets to be inserted at once for a reading can be taken.
The result then needs to be divided by the number of samples.
Micrometer

The best way to measure paper thickness is with a micrometer, which is able to give

the most accurate results. Micrometers are capable of delivering measurements to

the nearest micron, which offers a highly precise look at the thickness of even single

sheets of paper or board.

Digital Micrometer
. It measures in the range of 0-0.50 in. (0-12.7 mm) and has a
sturdy frame, ensuring it can measure boards of a wide range
of thicknesses. It can also store and analyze up to 100 readings,
including high, low, average and standard deviation for each
series of tests.
Paper Grain? It Matters

Printers and paper specifiers spend a lot of time looking at papers. Their textures, colors, and
weights are very important in any print project. But what about the paper grain?
Paper grain is the direction of fibers in a sheet or web of paper, generated during paper formation.
As paper moves forward along the forming wire on a papermaking machine, the fibers align
themselves in a direction parallel to the direction of wire travel through the machine. When paper
is cut into sheets, it will be either long-grain if the fibers are aligned parallel to the sheet’s longer
dimension or short-grain if the fibers are aligned parallel to the sheet’s shorter dimension
paper will tear and fold more easily with the grain and with greater difficulty against
the grain
