Reflection: Do I want to be powerful or an influencer?
Influence and Power (Authority) can often reside within you. You have the ability to acquire both. However, to
be a leader in my classroom a balance of authority and influence is needed. Instead of choosing one between a powerful
leader or an effective influencer, I am much prefer to ask my self this “Do I Have the Characteristics of a Powerful
Influencer?”. Upon researching this topic, I noticed that a well-balanced mindset is the key. Human as we are, We have a
unique personality and set of experiences that would guide us to become a good administrator someday.
We need leaders who can balance power and influence, push and pull. We must always remember that
too much emphasis on power can be frustrating and tend to diminish people. On the other hand, too much effort on
the influence side of our scale, we might never get to where we want to go because leaders are not making it
happen when the going gets tough.
To sum it up, effective leaders must balance power and influence. They must leverage power effectively
with an unwavering commitment to achieve change, and by making it clear through their words, actions and
decisions that the change will happen. Leaders must leverage influence by enabling each individual to navigate the
change in their own way, and by having the flexibility to understand and learn from resistance when it happens.
Leaders must exercise both push and pull forces as needed to drive change forward .
To the future administrators, please bear in mind always to have a well-balanced mindset on the used of Power
and Influence.
As a healthy individual or organization, power and influence are proportionate attributes, counterbalancing each other. Thank
You, God Speed.
