I. Course Number: Education 216


II. Nomenclature: Foundation of Education
III.Course Credit: 3 units/3 hrs. per week/54 hrs per semester or summer
IV. Course Description:
This is a basic subject in the masteral program attempted to provide graduate students a
thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles of good foundations involved in the teaching-
learning process. The teacher is the most important factor in the classroom situation be in the
elementary, secondary, tertiary and post graduate education. With the strong foundations of
education constituting the three disciplines: Psychology, Sociology, and Philosophy, he can
improve the quality of instruction that is functional and practical.

IV. CREDIT: 3 units ------------ 3 hrs. a week ---------54 hrs. a


semester/summer

V - OBJECTIVES: Before the end of the semester/summer, the students


are expected to:
1. Understand the meaning of foundations and its discipline.
2. Acquire scientific knowledge relevant to psychology of teaching as
sound basis for teaching – learning process and implications of
psychological problems of education obtaining in the classroom as
well as in the lives of the students/learners.
3. Understand, expound and illustrate the various sociological principles
and problems, concepts and facts which are contributory to curricular
re-direction toward the attainment of educational goals.
4. Identify educational philosophical principles applicable in curricular
enrichment of the Philippine education designed to meet the
demands of society.
5. Provide the important insights into education and professional
opportunities that exist for knowledgeable and dedicated educators.
VI – COURSE CONTENTS:
Part I – Psychological Foundation of Education – 18 hrs.
Emphasizes the various kinds of behavior which have reference to
education. It discusses the nature of the following:
The beginning of life;
Understanding the Psychology of Teaching and Learning.
Individual differences: Elem. Secondary and Tertiary.
The learning process.
Factors that Conditions Learning.
Laws and Theories of Learning.
Transfer of Learning.
behavior Problems in the classroom.

Part II – Sociological Foundations of Education =- 18 hrs.

Man should understand the manner in which one develops a “self” or


becomes “human”. This aims to enable the students to gain some insights
into factors which influence public opinion, mass movements or crowds.

Part III – Philosophical Foundations of Education – 18 hrs


Provides the information needed to understand the historical
foundation in conventional chronological approach from primitive times to
the present. It shows the contributions that persons involved in education
can make to society.
Deals with the educational philosophies. The direction and shape of
human beliefs are implied in the nature of man, about religion, about
learning and knowing. But implied in all of these and most important of all
are judgments of value, of what is from or not good, to do in education, of
what is important, or unimportant.
Presents the Philippine educational system, its history and laws that
govern its transition. It scrutinizers the idea of application of theory of
practice education. Thinking about education may do something to a
person which subtly modifies his vision and perspective, changing and
illuminating his action as teacher.
Presents the foundations of technology education. The inclusion of
technology in the foundations of education.
