Community Language Learning
(CLL) is a teaching method
developed in the 1970s in the
United States by Jesuit priest,
psychologist, and educator Charles
Curran.

COMMUNITY
LANGUAGE LEARNING
TEACHING METHOD
A. CLL emphasizes the importance of the
learners themselves by calling them
"clients" and letting them design
lesson content.

B. The teacher plays the part of

"counsellor", while the learners are
encouraged to work together,
interacting, and helping each other
personally in a supportive community.

C. The method, which aims to alleviate

the anxiety and threat so often felt by
language learners, is sometimes
described as "counselling learning".

CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS METHOD
1. Cooperation is encouraged; the teacher and the
students together make decisions in class.

2. The teacher routinely probes the students’

attitudes toward learning and helps them
overcome their negative feelings.

3. Particular grammar, pronunciation, and

vocabulary points are treated based on the
students’ expressed needs. Understanding and
speaking are emphasized.

4. The native language is used in conversations,

instructions, and sessions for expressing feelings.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS METHOD
5. A non-threatening teaching style is encouraged;
correct forms are modeled.

6. Learning about aspects of culture is integrated

with language learning.

7. Self-evaluation is encouraged to promote the

students’ awareness of their progress.

8. Non-defensive learning requires security (students

assert and involve themselves), attention,
reflection ( students think about language and
their experience in learning it), retention and
discrimination ( sorting out target language
forms).

TEACHER AND LEARNER
ROLES
In Community Language Learning, learners become
members of a community. The learners and the teacher are
learning through interacting with members of the
community. Learning is not viewed as an individual
accomplishment but as something that is achieved
collaboratively. Learners are expected to listen attentively to
the teacher, to freely provide meanings they wish to
express, and to repeat target utterances without hesitation.

ADVANTAGES AND DISAVANTAGES
Advantages of CLL: Works well with lower-level
students who are struggling in spoken English, lower
students' anxiety and overcome threatening affective filter, it
create a warm sympathetic and trusting relationship
between teacher and learners, train students become
independent, counselor allow to learners to determine types
of conversation.

Disadvantages of CLL: Some learners find it difficult to

speak on tape, in order to student become independent,
teacher might neglect the need for guidance, teacher has t
be highly proficient in target language and in the language of
students, it is time consuming to carry out, translation is an
intricate and difficult task.
