Every animal cell is surrounded by a cell

membrane. The cell membrane keeps the

outside out and the inside in, except for things
that a cell needs in order to grow and stay
alive, such as water, nutrients, oxygen and
other things.
Inside the cell membrane is a nucleus,
which is responsible for the three most
important functions of a cell: reproduction,
differentation and metabolism. An organism
can reproduce itself because of its nucleus. An
organism can differentiate the different organs
of its body in the proper time and order
because of the nucleus. An organism can build
and repair its body tissues because of its nucleus.
It is the nucleus of the cell that makes an individual
a unique organism.
Surrounding the nucleus is a jellylike
substance called the cytoplasm which contains
the mitochondria, lysosomes, and vacuoles.
Mitochondria extract the energy from food and
convert it to a form that can be used by the cell.
Lysosomes are bodies that store digestive
enzymes. Vacuoles are fluid-filled membranes for
storing food and expelling wastes.
All these living materials in a cell are called
protoplasm.
ACTIVITY 2
Multiple choice. Each item in the test consist of
four (4) options. Choose the correct answer.
1. The living material inside the cell is called
cytoplasm. How is the material kept inside the cell
without mixing with the cytoplasm of other cell.
a. The cell is surrounded by a cell
membrane.
b. Cells are farther apart; one is not generally
in contact with other cells.
c. Cytoplasm is a jellylike substance that
remains in place.
d. The nucleus of each cell attracts its own
cytoplasm. 12345
