WHAT IS SCIENCE?

• The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of

the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through
observation and experiment.
WHAT IS BUSINESS?

• Refers to an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial ,

industrial or professional activities.
RELATIONSHIP OF SCIENCE AND BUSINESS

• The exchange between science and business is “not just the invention of new
products but also the critical analysis of processes and operations by science
to improve the functions of business”.
• “Science help business through improving existing supply and productions
chains”.
• “Business can enrich science through the free exchange of ideas”.
FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES
*PHILOSOPHY

• Science is a special category of knowledge

• The process of science is devoid of belief.
• The scientific path to knowledge is nothing to do with belief or faith.
• Business is about building corporate entities that growth and return profits.
• Business determines its performance of itself by the formula “A-L=E”.
• Business thinking is more introspective.
FUNDAMENTAL CLASH

• Science focus on issues while business favored economy in making

decisions.
• Scientist feels that science should be respected, accepted and acted upon.
• In business, they look back at A-L=E
• In business, quality of scientific knowledge is not a special that forces them
into action.
CERTAINTY VS. UNCERTAINTY

• Scientist lives comfortably with uncertainty.

• In business, uncertainty is a risk, a gamble to be avoided if possible, or a
calculation for success that needs to be carefully assessed before being acted upon.
• Sustainability in science is a “measure of exploitation of a resource within a
cycle”.
• Sustainability in business is “a statement about the longevity of an activity
conducted in the pursuit of profit”.
• “There are, of course, many other philosophical differences between science
and business that hinder their reconciliation and ability to work together to
build a better world”.
