1. Characteristics of a
Research Problem

Generally speaking, whether a research problem is historical,

descriptive, experimental, or case study, the characteristics
of a research problem have the acronym:

S.M.A.R.T
SPECIFIC- Objective clearly states, so anyone reading it can understand,
S what will be done and who will do it.

M MEASURABLE- It is easy to measure by using research instruments, apparatus,

or equipment.

A ACHIEVABLE- Objectives is realistic given the realities faced in the community.

Setting reasonable objectives helps set the project up for success.

RELEVANT- A relevant objective makes sense, that is, it fits the purpose of the grant, it
R fits the culture and structure of the community, and it addresses the vision of the
project.

T TIME-BOUND- Every objective has a specific timeline for completion.

2. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH PROBLEM
Interesting- An interesting research problem attracts the Relevant to the needs and problems of the people-
attention of the researcher and other people to conduct the Researchers must keep in mind that they conduct research not
research project even without an incentive or research grant at for their personal aggrandizement but to solve the needs and
all. problems of the people.

Innovative- Though replicability in conducting research is allowed, Relevant to government’s thrust- A research problem must
it is advisable that a research problem is something novel, original, respond to the government’s thrusts. For instance, the
and unique to attract the attention of the people and contribute to government’s thrust is on “waste management” or “war on wastes”.
the economic development of the country. An investigator will conduct a study to fight against waste.

Cost-effective- A good research problem should be Measurable and time-bound- A good research problem is
economical and effective in solving the needs and problems measurable by using research instruments, apparatus or
of society; it should also augment the socioeconomic and equipment, as well as statistical tools to arrive at scientific and
health conditions of the people and many others. meaningful results.
3. The Research
Objectives
Research objectives describe what your research is trying to achieve and explain
why you are pursuing it. They summarize the approach and purpose of your
project and help to focus your research. Your objectives should appear in the
introduction of your research paper, and at the end of your problem statement.
They should:
-Establish the scope and depth of your project
-Contribute to your research design
-Indicate how your project will contribute to existing knowledge
4. Statement of Research Problem &
Objectives
The research problem and research objectives have the same characteristics (SMART)
but they differ in form because the former is stated in interrogative or question form and
the latter, in declarative form.

Research Problem- It’s a statement that outlines the specific problem, challenge, or question that you
try to address or answer. It should essentially address what is the problem and why is it important.

Objectives - The research problem is the goal, and the objectives define strategies and implementation
steps to attain this goal. Thus, it highlights how you plan to address your research problem.
5. EXAMPLE OF EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH (1)
“Cultivation of Eucheuma in municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using lantay and hanging methods”.
PROBLEM: the main problem of this study is to cultivate Eucheuma in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using
lantay and hanging methods. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following questions:
1. What is the mean weight increment of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using lantay
and hanging methods?
2. What is the mean temperature, pH, and oxygen of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines
using lantay and hanging methods?
3. Which of the methods, Lantay or hanging, is more effective in cultivating Eucheuma in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo,
Philippines?
4. Is there a significant mean difference in the weight increment of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo,
Philippines?
5. Is there a significant mean difference in the temperature, pH, and oxygen of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of
Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using lantay and hanging methods?
5. EXAMPLE OF EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH (2)
“Cultivation of Eucheuma in municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using lantay and hanging methods”.
OBJECTIVES: the main purpose of this study is to cultivate Eucheuma in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using
lantay and hanging methods. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following research objectives:
1. To determine the mean weight increment of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using
lantay and hanging methods.
2. To find out the mean temperature, pH, and oxygen of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines
using lantay and hanging methods.
3. To identify which of the methods Lantay or hanging, is more effective in cultivating Eucheuma in the municipal waters of
Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines.
4. To determine if there’s a significant mean difference in the weight increment of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal waters of
Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines.
5. To find out if there is a significant mean difference in the temperature, pH, and oxygen of Eucheuma cultured in the municipal
waters of Estancia, Iloilo, Philippines using lantay and hanging methods.
6. EXAMPLE OF DESCRIPTIVE DESIGN (1)
“correlation between job-related problems and job performance of staff nurses in private and government hospitals in the
city and province of Iloilo, Philippines.”
PROBLEM: The main problem of the study is to correlate job-related problems and job performance of staff nurses in private and
government hospitals in the city and province of Iloilo, Philippines. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following questions:
1. What is the extent of the seriousness of job-related problems as perceived by staff nurses in the city and province of Iloilo,
Philippines about: (a) administration of top management, (b) administration of middle management, (c) administration of lower
management, (d) communication, (e) financial condition, (f) hospital facilities, and (g) job hazard when classified as a whole,
civil status, age, and length of nursing practice?
2. What is the mean job performance of staff nurses in private and government hospitals in the city and province of Iloilo,
Philippines?
3. What is the correlation between job-related problems and the job performance of staff nurses in private and government
hospitals in the city and province of Iloilo, Philippines?
4. Is there a significant difference in job-related problems as perceived by staff nurses in the city and province of Iloilo, Philippines
about: (a) administration of top management, (b) administration of middle management, (c) administration of lower
management, (d) communication, (e) financial condition, (f) hospital facilities, and (g) job hazard when classified as a whole,
civil status, age, and length of nursing practice?
6. EXAMPLE OF DESCRIPTIVE DESIGN (2)

OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this study is to correlate job-related problems and job performance of staff nurses in private
and government hospitals in the city and province of Iloilo, Philippines. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following objectives:
1. To determine the extent of the seriousness of job-related problems as perceived by staff nurses in the city and province of Iloilo,

Philippines.
3. To correlate correlation between job-related problems and the job performance of staff nurses in private and government
hospitals in the city and province of Iloilo, Philippines.
4. To test the significant difference on job-related problems as perceived by staff nurses in the city and province of Iloilo,
Philippines in relation to: (a) administration of top management, (b) administration of middle management, (c) administration of
lower management, (d) communication, (e) financial condition, (f) hospital facilities, and (g) job hazard when classified as a
