CONSERVATION

WHAT IS CONSERVATION?

 National Geographic states that ‘conservation is the act of protecting Earth’s natural
resources for current and future generations.’

 That is, we need to manage the environments that we live in and the resources that we
use in a sustainable way.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF CONSERVATION:

 1. In – situ conservation - is the on-site conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of plants
or animal species

 2. Ex – situ conservation - involves maintenance and breeding of endangered plants and animals under
partially or wholly controlled conditions in specific areas such as zoo, gardens, nurseries.
CONSERVATION METHODS
A. HABITATS CAN BE PRESERVED BY:

 1. Setting aside areas for restricted access and use eg. Aripo Scientific Reserve, Buccoo Reef, Bird
of Paradise Island and Central Forest Reserve , Tobago ( the oldest reserve in the Western Hemisphere)

 2. Setting up conservation organizations responsible for the environment eg.

Environmental Management Authority, The Asa Wright Nature Centre, Emperor Valley Zoo, Pointe – a – Pierre
Wild Fowl Trust,

 3. Developing and enforcing laws that limit the impact of industries, etc. on the environment
B. PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE

 Game sanctuaries
 Legislation
 Issuing permits to hunters during the hunting season
 Ensuring that animals with low populations cannot be hunted
 Regulation of mesh size in fishing nets
PROTECTED SPECIES IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO:

 1. ocelot
 2. silky anteater
 3. porcupine
 4. pawi
 5. red howler monkey
 6. scarlet ibis
 7. pelican
 8. manatee
 9. leatherback sea turtle
 10. sabre wing humming bird
 11. macaw
C. MAINTAIN NATURAL RESOURCES

 By more efficient use of the biotic resources, mineral resources, water and fuel, and developing alternative sources
of energy (eg. Solar, wave, wind etc)

 Use of renewable resources vs non renewable resources

WHAT IS THE INDIVIDUAL’S ROLE IN CONSERVATION?

 Individuals can cultivate habits of:

1. Reusing
2. Reducing
3. Recycling
4. Restoring
5. Refusing
ASSESSMENT (BOTH ACTIVITIES ARE DUE 30TH NOV, 2020)

 1. Create a Christmas decoration made from RECYCLED MATERIAL ONLY! (10%)

 AND

 2. Either:

a. Set up recycling bins or

b. Design and set up a simple compost bin (20%)
Guidelines: use materials at HOME, the recycle or compost bins must be in use, include information, such as, what materials were used to set up
the bins, what items were recycled or added to the compost heap, what is the importance of this activity etc.

Information will be posted in Google Classroom. Remember to take pictures. Again, be creative – there is no need to purchase anything! Use
your creativity and imagination to complete the assessment.
