WHAT IS CONSERVATION?
National Geographic states that ‘conservation is the act of protecting Earth’s natural
resources for current and future generations.’
That is, we need to manage the environments that we live in and the resources that we
use in a sustainable way.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF CONSERVATION:
1. In – situ conservation - is the on-site conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of plants
or animal species
2. Ex – situ conservation - involves maintenance and breeding of endangered plants and animals under
partially or wholly controlled conditions in specific areas such as zoo, gardens, nurseries.
CONSERVATION METHODS
A. HABITATS CAN BE PRESERVED BY:
1. Setting aside areas for restricted access and use eg. Aripo Scientific Reserve, Buccoo Reef, Bird
of Paradise Island and Central Forest Reserve , Tobago ( the oldest reserve in the Western Hemisphere)
3. Developing and enforcing laws that limit the impact of industries, etc. on the environment
B. PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE
Game sanctuaries
Legislation
Issuing permits to hunters during the hunting season
Ensuring that animals with low populations cannot be hunted
Regulation of mesh size in fishing nets
PROTECTED SPECIES IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO:
1. ocelot
2. silky anteater
3. porcupine
4. pawi
5. red howler monkey
6. scarlet ibis
7. pelican
8. manatee
9. leatherback sea turtle
10. sabre wing humming bird
11. macaw
C. MAINTAIN NATURAL RESOURCES
By more efficient use of the biotic resources, mineral resources, water and fuel, and developing alternative sources
of energy (eg. Solar, wave, wind etc)
1. Reusing
2. Reducing
3. Recycling
4. Restoring
5. Refusing
