BENEFITS OF

SWIMMING
LESSON 3
Why Swim?
◦ One of the very best forms of exercise is swimming as it is
requires total body movement in a highly cushioned
environment- the water. Water id a unique medium to
exercise because of the following according to McEvoy:

1. Buoyancy greatly reduces weight- bearing stress on joints

and muscles.
2. The water resist movement so that the swimmer exercises
with relatively slow movements and slow total body
velocity.]
3. The swimmer’s usual horizontal position assists in
returning blood to the heart during activity.
4. The temperature and high conductivity of water help to
remove heat from the body during exercise.
Psychological Benefits
Weiner enumerates what swimming can do for our psychology:
1. Swimming relaxes you.- Swimming is great as a relaxer, and the person who enjoys kinetic pleasure and
his own thoughts can find enjoyment in it.
2. Swimming brings you solitude and freedom.- Swimming sets the one’s mind free of social demands and
allows it to explore with no attachment.
3. Swimming brings you the satisfaction of personal achievement. - To endure at a goal you’ve set for
yourself is a source of satisfaction everyone looks toward in a time of uncertainty and change and the
pleasant, comfortable surroundings of the water make it easier to meet your goal in swimming.
4. Swimming enhances your creativity.- Upon mental process, perception and creativity, water has some
mysterious effect. You’re not just thinking but you are thinking better and clearer and sharper than you
ever have before. Water alters your perspective. Solutions to the problems develop more clearly so that
you feel closer to what’s true or right. Ideas flicker and intensify.
5. Swimming gives you confidence in yourself.- Having a fit and in tune body makes you confident.
6. Swimming has a great effect in reducing tension and irritability. - Physical and emotional tensions can
be released in exercise. Anyone can release their frustrations safely and have a good time.
7. Swimming improves independent mobility. - Especially to those without many other chances to move
around, the ability to move more freely in the water can be tremendous psychological boost.
BENEFITS OF
SWIMMING
LESSON 4
Physiological Benefits
Regular swimming brings changes in the physical body. This activity can help to
improve body health including:
1. Cardiovascular Endurance. -Cardiovascular
efficiency improves with the right swimming
exercise. Human’s heart can be strengthen and can
pump blood with each beat.

◦ Lower heart rate at rest and in moderate exercise

◦ Increased capacity of the blood to carry oxygen
◦ Increased inability of muscles to use oxygen
◦ Lower resting heart pressure
2. Swimming helps to improve motor
function.- Motor function is the ability of the
brain to direct purposeful physical activities.
Motor function includes the following
components:

◦ Speed, the ability to act of move quickly

◦ Agility, the ability to change direction with
controlled body movements
◦ Perceptual motor function
3. Muscular Strength and Endurance.
◦ Muscular strength is the ability of muscle to exert effort.
Strength leads to endurance, power, and resistance to
fatigue.
◦ Muscular Endurance is the ability of muscle to contract
repeatedly with the same force, over an extended period
of time.

4. Regular swimming helps control body weight

◦ Increases the rate in which your body burns calories
◦ Decreases body fat
Social Benefits
1. Peer Group Interaction
2. Safety
BASIC
REQUIREMENTS OF
SWIMMING
LESSON 5
BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF
SWIMMING
McEvoy is an Australian swimmer who represents his country in swimming Olympics. He is one of the
most known swimmers who enumerate the basic requirements of swimming.
1. Knowledge- This aspect talks about your understanding of how to do and what to do on something. It
refers to theoretical or practical understanding. In knowledge you can know all the rules of a sport,
know all the teams and all players, know all the statistics.
2. Skill-Skills are the “applied knowledge”. It refers to the performance of someone to use his or her
knowledge effectively and readily in execution of ability.
3. Attitude- In sports, you must have a desire to learn, a willingness to challenge yourself, and the ability
to tolerate some initial discomfort and to reject the many excuses often used to stay out of water.
RULES FOR POOL
USE
LESSON 6
Basic RULES for Pool Use:
1. Walk, do not run.
2. Listen to instructions and obey pool rules.
3. No diving in the shallow end. Only dive in the designated areas, and never dive into an above ground pools. Diving injuries can
be a lifetime consequences.
4. No roughhousing. Drowning accidents can occur during rough play in a pool, especially with young children.
5. Don’t play around drains and covers. Even when properly equipped, pool drains and covers can be dangerous. Never play near
drains and suctions. Entrapments occur when someone or something becomes stuck to these drains or suctions and pose a serious
danger to young children who are too small to break away.
6. Use pool safety equipment properly. Pool safety equipment should not be used as toys.
7. Out of the pool and inside when storms threaten. Lighting can strike suddenly, even in the absence of rain or blue sky visible.
8. Know how to respond in an emergency. Always have a phone available. Children must be taught to notify adults immediately if
someone is having difficulty in the water. Learn how to do basics of CPR and first aid.
9. Share safety instructions with family or who are with you in swimming.
10. Never leave a child unattended near the water and do not trust a child’s life into another child.
