MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE WHAT MATTERS
November 8, 2007
By Jason Foo, Holmdel, NJ

In my life, what matters most to me is my friends and family. Just think,

“Where would I be if I had no friends and family.” These people are the
most important human beings I know of on Earth. They always get me
through rough times when I am down, and they are always very
understanding of what I am going through. They are my living diary, and I
can tell them almost anything that is on my mind or something that bothers
me.

eltc/pro-elt/2022/anne Wednesday, September 14, 25

2022
continued…….

My family matters so much to me in my life. I always ask myself, “What

would I do without them.” The truth is, I really do not know what I would
do without them. Life is already as difficult as climbing to the top of Mount
Everest. To have my family every step of the way is so reassuring. I can
talk to them about my problems and what I am having trouble with. They
will try their best to help me and that is all that I ask for. Yeah, sometimes
they can be annoying, but still, I know they love me and all they are trying
to do is help. My family matters to me because they give me a sense of
love, joy, and laughter during rough times. I share a great bond with my
family and that is probably the most important aspect in life.
eltc/pro-elt/2022/anne Wednesday, September 14, 26
2022
continued…….

My friends are my second family. I can rely on them even if the world
depended on it. That is how much trust I have in them. If I cannot come to my
real family for some reason, I always go to my friends to seek a little guidance.
My friends are the ones who keeps me going in life. They always seem to give
me that little spark. My friends are my cure for all my sadness, loneliness, or
anger that I have upon me and I know for a fact that no medicine can alleviate
that pain. They give me a great sense of joy, laughter, and competition. Whether
it is playing sports with them or hanging out in the movies together I always
know I can have fun. They are my outlet to release all of my energy. My friends
are one of the few things that matters most to me in my life.

eltc/pro-elt/2022/anne Wednesday, September 14, 27

2022
continued…….

From my perspective, living the dream life is having family and lifelong
friends that will support you throughout the whole walk of life. It’s not just
having a great deal of money that will buy you everything in life. Yeah,
being rich would be cool, but that is an added bonus in life that comes
through hard work and determination. If you think that money is the most
important thing that matters in life, you are wrong, and it means that you
are just a self-centered person. What really matters in life is your friends
and family that love you. Love and happiness are the greatest things on
Earth and that is what really should matter to you.

Task: Write an article in about 200 words and give your

The magazine Malaysia Insight Dark World has recently published an article on
cyberbullying and received countless comments from readers. Many have
insisted that people who bully others online should be banned from social media
sites. The magazine has invited readers to send in essays in which they give their
personal view of cyberbullying. The best five essays will be published in the
next edition of the magazine.

In your essay you should:

• write about your own experience of using social media sites.
• give reasons why cyberbullies should or shouldn’t be banned from such
sites.
• recommend other forms of punishment.
• suggest ways of dealing with the problem.

Read the text and complete the missing gaps (1- 6) with the following:

Littering has become a Serious Habit

1. SMOKERS have become the latest bogey man as the nation goes on an all-out war on
smoking. In Kuala Lumpur, the city council DBKL and the Health Ministry are leading the
crusade to wipe out a common enemy ... smokers. (ANSWER)

2. I saw one hanging precariously above one of the many overflowing dustbins in the park,
which are by the way perpetually overflowing. Another was posted on a tree at a picnic area
that was strewn with discarded paper cups, bottles, plastics, half-eaten meals, wrappers and
even soiled diapers. These were repeated many times in various parts of the park.

Sadly, this has become a common sight in many parks around the city and led to unhealthy
pest infestations. Yet I did not see even one minuscule NO LITTERING sign. (ANSWER)

continued………

Littering has become a Serious Habit

3. We can designate areas to smoke or not to smoke, but we cannot designate areas for
littering. (ANSWER)

4. Throwing rubbish wherever and whenever, even from high-rise buildings, which had
caused serious injuries and loss of lives, and abuse of public toilets (not flushing, soiling and
even breaking toilet seats, and flooding toilets without a thought for the next user) have
become Malaysian habits.

It doesn’t matter if the dustbin is just a couple of feet away, Malaysians will just dump and
leave their trash on the spot. It is a total waste of taxpayers’ money to spend not only on
repairs for the wear and tear but also on the high number of workers needed to clean up after
our inconsiderate citizens. (ANSWER)

Wednesday, September 14, 2022 eltc/pro-elt/2022/anne 52

continued………

Littering has become a Serious Habit

5. I have friends who are “considerate” smokers. They will ask for permission from those
around them before they light up. (ANSWER)

6. They will never smoke in the presence of young children and old people. There is even a
friend who has a small portable ashtray in her handbag. But I have yet to meet a considerate
litterbug.

I would like to congratulate the Health Minister for his efforts to promote healthy living.
However, banning smoking is just one way but not the only way to promote healthy living.
(ANSWER)

Wednesday, September 14, 2022 eltc/pro-elt/2022/anne 53

continued………

Littering has become a Serious Habit

I therefore urge policymakers, regulators and enforcers to have a balanced approach in their
efforts to inculcate healthy living in more aspects than just banning smoking. And why are
smokers fined but litterbugs get away scot-free?

ANSWERS
CHOOSE THE CORRECT ANSWERS FOR Q1 TO 6.

A I hate to be judgmental, but I think litterbugs are selfish, thoughtless and badly brought up. I don’t
know when this loss of civic-mindedness has become second nature to so many Malaysians.
B Lack of civic-mindedness is causing far more direct and indirect health issues and social problems
besides giving Malaysia a bad image.
C There is definitely a need to reintroduce civic classes in schools and it should start from kindergarten so
that responsible and considerate behaviour can be ingrained in our future generations from an early
age.
D I was walking in a park just yesterday and huge newly minted NO SMOKING signage was put up
prominently at various strategic locations.
E They will never smoke in a closed or confined area and will always do so only in areas designated for
smoking.
F I think littering has become a serious Malaysian habit and, sad to say, not much has been done to get rid
of this scourge which, in my opinion, is far worse than smoking.
