 Effective listening is actively absorbing the information,


showing that you are listening and interested, and
providing feedback to the speaker.

Importance of Listening

Communication is not complete without effective listening


 An attentive listener stimulates better speaking by the
speaker

 A good listener learns more than an indifferent listener


 A good listener can restructure vague speaking in a
way that produces clearer meaning
 A good listener learns to detect prejudices, assumptions
and attitudes
Types of Listening

1) Active listening : It involves paying attention to the words that


are being spoken

2) Selective Listening : We remember only Selective portion.

3) Empathetic listening : Empathetic listening is paying attention


to another person with empathy [emotional identification,
compassion, feeling, insight]. 
4) Ignoring listening : It is the worst type of listening as it
involves ignoring the speaker Completely
How to Listen Effectively

Ten Principles of Effective Listening

1) Stop Talking : “If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would
have two tongues and one ear.” Mark Twain.
2) Prepare Yourself to Listen : Focus on the speaker.  Put other things out of
mind.
3) Put the Speaker at Ease: Remember their needs and concerns. Nod or
use other gestures or words to encourage them to continue.
4) Remove Distractions: Focus on what is being said and Avoid
unnecessary interruptions. 
5) Empathise: Try to understand the other person’s point of view.

6) Be Patient: A pause, even a long pause, does not necessarily


mean that the speaker has finished.
7) Avoid Personal Prejudice: Try to be impartial. Everybody has a
different way of speaking .
8) Listen to the Tone: Volume and tone both add to what someone is
saying.
9) Listen for Ideas – Not Just Words : You need to get the whole
picture, not just isolated bits and pieces.
10) Wait and Watch for Non-Verbal Communication : We don’t just
listen with our ears but also with our eyes

Tips For being a Good Listener

• Give feedback. Sit up straight and look directly at


the speaker. Now and then, nod to show that you
understand. At appropriate points you may also smile,
frown, laugh, or be silent. These are all ways to let the
speaker know that you are really listening. Remember,
you listen with your face as well as your ears!
