STEP 1

• Read the passage quickly (skim) to get


the central theme.
• This will give you the title of the
passage.

STEP 2

• Read the passage again, this time slowly


(scan) to identify the main points.
• Ignore irrelevant examples, quotes and
details.
Step 3
• Group the points under subheadings.
• There should be a link between each
point and the subheading.
• Do not write any complete sentence in
the notes. (Change the finite verbs to
infinitives, gerunds and participles.)

• Write the subheadings and points using proper numbering and indentation.

Create 5 or 6 recognizable abbreviations.

• After the notes, write the key to those abbreviations in a box
• First and last few letters of the words with a dot at the end (mfg., prblm., rqrd. )

Things to remember

 Be brief and give clear expression.


 Do not forget to include important facts and information.
 Information should be systematically divided and subdivided .
 In three to five words, prepare the notes. Note, maximum 5 words in each
line.
 Use universally recognized symbols and abbreviations wherever necessary
and provide key to the abbreviations.
 Main title should be short and it should reflect the spirit of the passage.
 Use proper indentation.

Common Problems and Solutions
• The content is very long – Don’t worry, 60% of it is unnecessary.
• Words are very tough – Just ignore them.
• Sentences are very long – Do not consider the supplementary sentence
between two commas.
Eg:(The Neolithic men, however, if you consider their tools, not considering
their sharpness, were thus more advanced than the paleolithic)
• I find too many facts that seem to be important – They seem to be, but not
really.
