ATTAINING A COMPREHENSIVE

after wisdom, and we can only
attain that wisdom if we will widen
our perspective in life.
Different point’s of view that will help you to attain a
comprehensive outlook in life.

C D
Filipino thought and values PHILOSOPHY
:Positive and negative aspects :Transcending and aiming for a life
of abundance
A. Expanding our philosophical frames : Western and
non-western traditions
 Many philosophers hold that there are three great original centers of
philosophy in the world-
Greek ( or western)
Indian
Chinese
 Historically speaking, Asians classics of the Indians and Chinese
predate the oldest of western classics.
 But, from the time of Greek triumvirate (Socrates, Plato and
Aristotle), there was a reversal
 The culture of the east is very different from the culture of the west
(primarily Europe and North America) but that does not mean each culture
is incapable of understanding certain features of the other.
 As the world becomes ‘smaller’, it is increasingly important to develop an
understanding of cultural centers around the globe.
 Each society or culture has its own ideas of itself, a definition of what is
important in Life, and its own notion of what the world is like; thus each
society or culture can be said to have its own “PHILOSOPHY”.
B. Filipino thinking: From local to global

 This section draws out elements or sketches of the general lines of

filipino Philosophy.
 The three dimentions of filipino thought are:
1. Loob
2. filipino concept of time
3. Bahala na
 These attitues and values constitutes the hidden spring of the filipino
mind.
01 Loob: Holistic and interior dimentions

Kagandahang-loob,
kabutihang loob and
kalooban are terms that
show sharing of one’s self
to others.
Loob goes between the values of
Loyalty, hospitality and pakikisama
(camaraderie, conformity) and respect to
authorities.

Filipino generally believe in the innate of

goodness of the human being.

The filipinos look at themselves as a total

whole---as a person conscious of his
freedom and proud of his human dignity.
02 Filipino Concept of time
Filipino time is mistakenly interpreted
as always delayed in the committed
time of arrival.

The concept of siesta time is also

important for filipino culture and must
not be necessarily considered negative
Time is also considered cyclic by us
filipinos or what we call the gulong ng
palad.

This philosophy of life makes the

filipinos pure optimist. When the so
called wheel of life is on the down trend,
he looks to the future with hope
because life’s wheel cannot stay down
forever..
03 Bahala na
The pre-Spanish people believe in a supreme being,
Batula na or Bathala.

Bathala is not an impersonal entity but rather a

personal being that keeps the balance in the
universe.

Bathala evolved into a Christian God wherein the

Filipinos put their trust in Him and this is where the
concept of Bahala na arose.

It is perceived as the courage to take risk, also it

means leaving everything to god and accepting
whatever the outcome of one’s decision might be.
C. Filipino thought and values: Positive and
negative aspect
 One of the filipino core values is the
Utang na loob or the dept of
gratitude. To help uplifts the life of
one’s own family, we gave great
value to the endurance and
hardwork of those whom we owe a
special debt of gratitude.
On the other side too much
indebtedness to patrons may also be
toxic and lead one person to abuse it.
BAYANIHAN or helping others in times of need is
another moving spirit of the Filipino people. Deep
down, as Filipinos, there exist the belief that
whatever good one has done, it will return to
one’s benefit.

 As Filipinos, we can be better understood by

how we adapt to our surroundings to survive.

 Here in the Philippines, unity and togetherness

serves as a protective factor for many constant
inconsistencies that have barged into our
history: Foreign, invasion, colonization and
threats of ecological nature..
D. Philosophy: Transcending and Aiming for a life of
abundance

Abundance
 comes from the Latin word Abundanare, meaning “to
overflow non-stop”.
 Is outflowing than incoming
 It is not about increasing material things or surpassing
people but our relationship with others, ourselves, with
nature and understanding that our life belongs to God.
Abundance is explained in different thoughts.

1. Abundance is not what we gather but what we

scatter.
2. Abundance is not what we keep but what we
give away.
3. Abundance is not what we hold but what we
share.
4. Abundance is a choice.
5. Abundance is to evolved into a higher being.
