WHAT ARE ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES

• Organizational strategies helps you decide HOW to present your

information. For instance, if my organizational strategy is
compare/contrast, then two things are being compared, so there is a back-
and-forth feature to the writing that helps to decide its organization.

EXPOSITORY WRITING.

1) Cause and Effect
2) Counterarguments
3) Evidence
4) Classification
5) Concession and Rebuttal
6) Comparison and Contrast
HOWEVER.......

• Today we will only be looking at three out of the six of the Organizational Strategies
that were highlighted in the previous slide.

The three are as follows:

1) Cause and Effect
2) Counterarguments
and lastly
3) Evidence
LET'S NOW DO AN IN DEPTH EXPLANATION INTO THREE
ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES

1) Cause and Effect

- The author presents information to explain the reason something happens- the cause,
and what happens because of it- the effect. This strategy helps the reader make a
connection between actions and consequences or understand the relationship between
two things.

2) Counterarguments
- Counterarguments make allowances for the opposite perspective, however it is
important to remember that a counterargument is an objection to an objection.
This means that in presenting his/her argument, the author may indicate that
individuals holding opposing views may have an objection to it. The author
outlines this objection and immediately refutes that objection by presenting a new
argument that opposes the objection raised – that is, the counterargument.
- However remember that a counterargument has two features – the objection and
a rejection of the objection. What the counter argument does is contradict the
objection raised and support this with evidence or reasoning. It encourages the
audience to dismiss objection as invalid and accept the counter argument
presented.

3) Evidence
- Evidence is defined as something that gives proof or leads to a conclusion. The
author presents facts and data to prove or disprove something or to substantiate
and strengthen claims made by the author. Evidence may be in the forms of facts,
statistical or historical data, testimony, quotes from reputable sources and even
logics. Evidence adds credibility to an argument, thus increasing the chances of
the audience trusting the claim made.
Example: The suspect's blood at the scene of a crime is an example of evidence.
The footprints in the house are an example of evidence that someone came inside.
