43rd ANNUAL CONVENTION 2022


The Secondary Schools Sanskritik Sangam invite members of staff and students to participate in the
projects at its 43rd Annual Convention. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we will be doing the convention
online.

DETAILS OF PROJECTS: -

1. PUBLIC SPEAKING (Forms 4 – 6) - Cite relevant Hindu references in your chosen topic.

NB: Video submission must be done in school uniform using a solid background.

Please submit a video recording by one (1) student per school to speak for no longer than seven (7)
minutes on one (1) of the topics listed below: -

1. Can Ayurvedic medicine contribute to longevity in the 21 st century? Discuss.

2. How does Hinduism and its cultural practices assist in our holistic wellbeing? Discuss.

3. Discuss the relevance of the scriptures in coping with social issues during the pandemic.

2. POETRY WRITNG

Submit ORIGINAL WORKS ONLY reflecting aspects of Indo-Trinbagonian Life and Culture. Each
submission must include: Student’s name, school, form and category at the top left-hand corner.

3. ESSAY WRITING

Submitted pieces MUST be done individually. Rewriting an existing piece with a few changes is not
original work. Please refer to Hindu scriptures and pay attention to grammar, spelling and organization
of information.
Each submission must include: Student name, school, form and category at the top left-hand corner.

3.1 SENIORS (Form 6 Only) – Maximum: 1000 – 1200 words.

1. Can Ayurvedic medicine contribute to longevity in the 21st century? Discuss.

2. How does Hinduism and its cultural practices assist in our holistic wellbeing? Discuss.

3. Discuss the relevance of the scriptures in coping with social issues during the pandemic.

3.2 INTERMEDIATE (Forms 4 – 5 Only) – Maximum: 750 – 800 words.

1. Explain the key concepts of Ayurvedic medicine, how it relates to Hindu culture and how we can
incorporate some of these practices into our daily lives.
2. What do the Vedas say about health care?
3. Discuss the changes in the Hindu practices of Antyeshti Sanskar during the pandemic.

3.3 JUNIORS (Forms 1 – 3 Only) – Maximum: 550 – 600 words.

1. Describe the benefits of five (5) plants mentioned in Ayurvedic medicine which can be found in
Trinidad.
2. How can a vegetarian diet lead to a healthy lifestyle?
3. How can the three (3) Gunas as explained in the Bhagavad Gita be used to guide our daily lives?

4. Story Telling (Forms 1 -3)

A story is the telling of an event, either true or fictional, in such a way that the listener experiences or
learns something just by the fact that he heard the story
Storytelling involves the smooth, sequential, dramatized narration of a series of events. The piece must
reflect the development of plot, diversity of characters and the narrator's viewpoint.
Marks will be awarded for embellishments such as costuming and creativity of character portrayals
through voice modulation and manipulation, facial expressions, gesticulation, and other forms of body
language.

Each school will have one (1) narrator to enact a story for FIVE (5) MINUTES, which must be
taken from one of the Hindu Literary Epics, Puranas, or Scriptures.

5. MONOLOGUE (Forms 4 – 5)
A Monologue is an expression of a character’s thoughts, feelings, and impressions, on a given topic, to
an audience. This is done in a narrative form and the piece should be convincingly portrayed using the
following:
❖ Relevant costume
❖ Supporting props
❖ Appropriate body movements/gesture
❖ Facial expressions
❖ Tone of Voice
❖ Eye contact with audience.

Present an original monologue (one student per school) on video, between 4-6 minutes long using a
solid background.
Portray one of the following characters: - Mahatma Ghandi, Swami Vivekananda or a female
indentured laborer coming to or in Trinidad

6. SPOKEN WORD (Form 6)

Spoken Word is poetry on a given topic/theme that is performed or read aloud to an audience in the
traditional Spoken Word rhythm, to evoke or provoke a reaction from the said audience.
It is different from a Monologue because:

❖ It is done in a particular rhyme/rhythm (upbeat).


❖ There is less movement. The narrator usually stays one place on the stage.
❖ Puns are usually used as well as proper tone of voice to illustrate the point effectively.

Costumes can be used to enhance the performance. Basic props may also be used.

Submit an original piece via video (one student per school), between 2-4 minutes long, using the
Spoken Word based on the suggested Topics:

1. Maa Sita as a single mother


2. Raam’s mental conflict of being a husband vs king
3. Arjuna’s conflict with family loyalty and duty

All video pieces are to be submitted by 13th March 2022

N.B.: - 1) Entries will NOT be accepted after the deadline date.


2) School Uniform must be worn for the prize giving ceremony.

7. ART-Junior to Senior

Art will be judged on Saturday 2nd April 2022 Only individual, original works will be accepted. Pieces
must be submitted by 9:30a.m. on the day.
Colours in drawing pieces must not overshadow drawings. Tracing and computer-generated art is
NOT accepted. Submission of paintings, drawings, stippling, mixed media or sketches on the
following themes are acceptable: -

Weddings, folk dance, festivals (Divali, Hosay or Phagwa etc.), reincarnation, fashions,
musical instruments, religious ceremonies or any other aspect of the Indian way of life.

Students are asked to carefully and securely attach their names, name of school, forms and
categories, but not their ages. Art pieces must be matted.
There is a maximum of three (3) entries per category, per school. One entry per student per
category.

8. CRAFT -Junior to Senior

Craft will be judged on Saturday 2nd April 2022. Only individual, original works will be accepted.
Pieces must be submitted by 9:30a.m. on the day.
You can use woodwork, rangoli, collage, mosaic, string craft, sculpture, wire bending – some
examples but not limited to these. Use of recyclable materials is encouraged.
Pieces should not exceed 15 inches in any dimension.
Items will be on display on the day of the Convention and must be collected by owners on the
same day.
Students are asked to carefully and securely attach their names, school name, forms, and
categories but not their ages.

9. Digital Art (Forms 4 - 6)

Design and create a comic strip of no more than four (4) panels using characters from the
Ramayan or Mahabharat, to help bring about awareness / preventative measures pertaining to
Covid-19. Work must be done using computer/phone and relevant graphic software.

Work must be original.


There is a maximum of three (3) entries per school. One entry per student.
