SPEAKING AND
IMPROMPTU
OBJECTIVES:

At the and of the discussion, the students can be able to:

a. Define Extemporaneous Speaking and Impromptu and;

b. Identify the strengths and limitations of extemporaneous speaking and


impromptu.
What is Extemporaneous Speaking?

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING may have a short or a long


preparation. The speaker may use an outline to guide him through his speech
to achieve better organization and to avoid leaving out details. But unlike
reading, extemporaneous speaking necessitates the speaker to formulate his
sentences while he is speaking.

Extemporaneous is a method that most lecturers and teacher use. A good


extemporaneous speaker must be spontaneous.
ADVANTAGES OF EXTEMPORANEOUS
SPEAKING
a. Easiest to prepare with notes as prompter

b. Does not require lengthy preparation unlike having memorized speech, or


reading directly from a manuscript

c. Does not need much practice to be effective; sounds interactive giving the
impression that the shared ideas of the speaker are created as he or she
structures the speech from his or her notes
DISADVANTAGES OF EXTEMPORANEOUS
SPEAKING
a. Takes time for preparation

b. Takes skill to deliver it well


What is impromptu?

IMPROMPTU means speaking at the spur of the moment. Since there is


very minimal or no time for preparation given for impromptu, the content
and organization may suffer. Impromptu may not deliver the best thought in
the best way but it brings out the most natural thing to say at the moment.
ADVANTAGES OF IMPROMPTU

a. Allows maintained direct eye contact with the audience


b. Sounds genuine for its informality

c. Spontaneous and responsive in an animated group context.


DISADVANTAGES OF IMPROMPTU

a. May like leave out important information if preparation is


hasty
b. Might lack logical organization due to minimal preparation
