EFFECT OF CLIMATE
CHANGE ON
TRANSPORTATION
INTRODUCTION
Transportation
 The movement of people and goods
from one location to another.
Forms of Transportation
 Ojeh V. N, Ojoh C.O: Impact of Climate Variability on
Road Transport in Warri Metropolis, P988-995. Nov.
2011. Department of Geography and Regional planning,
Delta State University, Abraka.

 From the paper, it was gathered that rainfall in Warri and

environs has increased over the years (1980-2010) by
199.85mm.

 The authors showed that between 1933 and 2006 there

have been a population growth of about 500,000 people.
 Data and method used in the study;

 The study area was Warri metropolis.

 Warri metropolis is located between latitude 5.30 0N and

longitude 5.29 0E and 5.48 0E. Warri Metropolis is made up
of Warri South, Udu and Uvwie local government areas.

 The area expansion of Warri metropolis is now over

100sqr.km (Efe, 2002) with a population that has grown
from 19,526 in 1993, 55,256 in 1933, 1963, 280,000 in
1980, 50,000 in 1991 to 536,023 in 2006.
 DATA COLLECTION

Climate data (rainfall, temperature and humidity) were

collected from NIMET, Warri where as average cost of
transportation was collected from NURTW diary Warri.
 RESULTS
The data were analyzed using the Multiple Regression
analysis

The authors discovered that temperatures for the 30years

(1980-2010) period were high with an increase of 1.38 0 C
and a mean of 26.420 C.

The highest and lowest mean annual temperature values of

32.830 C and 26.420 C in 2010 and 1974 respectively.

The authors concluded that if this warming continues there

will be a risk of between 1.40 C and an urban warming of
4.180 C, indicating climate change.
 CREDIT TO THE RESEARCHERS WORK
 According to the researchers work, there is a significant
relationship between transport cost and climate variables
(rainfall, temperature and humidity) which is evidence that
Frequency(F) values of 37.397 which is greater than the critical
table value of 4.07 which implied that the model is significant.
 DEDUCTIONS FROM THE STUDY
In my opinion, i believe that population growth may also
contribute to the increase in transport fair in Warri.

I observed that there are other forms of road transportation in

Warri (e.g. motor bike “Okada” which NURTW does not
have authority over hence, the transport fare data collected by
NURTW may not have been a fair representation of the
average transport fare in Warri Metropolis.

 SHORTCOMINGS
 Transport cost in Warri metropolis is significantly dependent
on rainfall, relative humidity and temperature.
 FINDINGS
I found out that the authors have not been able to highlight
the individual contributions to transport fare in Warri since
there were other factors such as population
growth/urbanization (rush hour-early hour and late evening).
 EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE
I hereby suggest that statistical tools such variance, co-
variance may have been employed which will give us the
individual contribution of these variables to fare in Warri.
In conclusion, the study showed a seasonal variation in
weather parameters and transportation in Warri
metropolis. In other words, an increase in rainfall,
temperature and humidity has a corresponding increase
in the cost of road transport.

 SUGGESTION/FINDINGS
 Climate change in Nigeria will affect transportation
primarily through increases in several types of weather
and climate extremes such as very hot days, intense
precipitation events, draught and rising sea level.
 RECOMMENDATION

 In general, i hereby recommend that transportation plans

and designs should, therefore, be carefully considered and
well informed by a range of factors, including consideration
of climate variability and change.
