Importance of Planting and
Propagating Trees and Fruit-Bearing
Trees

Planting and propagating trees and

fruit-bearing trees is one way of making
food available to everyone regardless of
one’s social economic status.
A backyard lot is enough to plant
and cultivate fruit trees or
vegetables. Aside from being
economical, planting fruit trees can
also be recreational for every family
member to get occupied with during
their free time at home.
But more than making food available to
everyone, fruit and plantation crops
contribute significantly in the nation’s
economic and social development
through direct and indirect sources of
income and in giving livelihood and
employment opportunities to a large
segment of rural folks.
Trees are valuable to the family and the community for the products
and amenities they give such as:

1. Food like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sugar.

2. Wood used as fuel for cooking and heating.
3. Construction materials which include lumber, plywood,
and board.
4. Fiber for the production of pulp and paper.
5. Chemical products such as resin, rubber, and turpentine.
Benefits Derived from Planting Trees and
Fruit-Bearing Trees
There are benefits derived from trees to maintain a healthy
environment. Some of these benefits include the following:

1. Trees are important source of food and medicine.

2. Trees provide shade and keep the environment cool, fresh and
beautiful.
3. They release oxygen that every individual needs to breathe.
4. They also absorb carbon dioxide; thus, cleaning the air of this
toxic material, and completing the carbon cycle.
5. Trees filter the heat of the sun and lessen the noise pollution,
acting as barriers to the sound around us.
6. They can help control flood and soil erosion that can cause human
fatalities.

7. They help maintain high quality water supply.

8. They serve as valuable wildlife habitat. Wild animals live in places

with many trees like in a forest.

9. They contribute to the beautiful landscapes in the city and the

countryside.

10. They prevent river and lake sedimentation. Have you observed a
riverbank that is lined endlessly with full grown trees? These trees
help hold the water in the lake and river and keep it there. This
prevents the lake and river from drying up.
Market Demands for Fruits

Planting fruit trees are a profitable business if one puts full attention, and has technical
knowledge and skill in planting coupled with hard work and determination. The demand for
fruits in the local and international market continues to be high because more people realize the
importance of fruits in the diet. Nowadays, people across ages are becoming more and more
health conscious. They realize the importance of good nutrition in promoting good health. Fruits
are high in vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. They are part of the daily intake of most
Filipino and people across the world. That is why the demand for fruits in the market remains
high.
Let’s Remember
1. Planting and propagating fruit-bearing trees is a source of livelihood for many
Filipinos.
2. You do not need huge tracts of land to plant trees. A small space in your backyard can
be
used to plant calamansi, papaya and banana.
3. Trees provide important benefits to humans. They:
-are a major source of food and medicines.
-release oxygen that humans need to breathe.
-provide shade and keep the environment cool.
-absorb carbon dioxide; thus, providing fresh air.
-filter the heat of the sun and lessen noise pollution; and
-help control flood and lessen soil erosion.
