What is
Projectile
Motion?
What is Projectile Motion?
Is the motion of an object thrown
(projected) into the air.
Projectile - any object that once
projected or dropped continues in motion by
its own inertia and is influenced only by the
downward force of gravity.
Trajectory -  The path that the
object follows. ( parabolic in
nature )
Projectiles move in TWO
dimensions
Since a projectile
moves in 2-
dimensions, it
therefore has 2
components just like
a resultant vector.
• Horizontal
and Vertical
Vertical “Velocity” Component
• Changes (due to gravity), does NOT cover equal
displacements in equal time periods.

Both the MAGNITUDE

and DIRECTION
change.

As the projectile moves As it moves down the

up the MAGNITUDE MAGNITUDE INCREASES
and the direction is
DECREASES and its DOWNWARD.
direction is UPWARD.
Combining the Components
Together, these
components produce
what is called a
trajectory or path. This
path is parabolic in
nature.

Vertical Changes Changes

Projectiles
Projectiles which have NO upward trajectory and NO
initial VERTICAL velocity.

Remember the following:
v- velocity vx - horizontal vy- vertical
velocity velocity
vox - initial horizontal voy- initial vertical
velocity
θ  - angle
velocity
dy- height dx- range (distance) t- time

dymax- max  height g= 9.8 m/s2

Equations for Projectile 1
• distance above the origin is
positive, while distances below the
origin are negatives.
• Upward velocities are positive,
downward velocities are
negative.
• Acceleration due to gravity (g) is always
negative. The origin is the point of release.
