THE
MOUTH
• Digestion starts in your mouth and that’s where you chew your
food. Chewing breaks your food into small pieces that are more
easily digested and saliva mixes with the food to turn it into a
moist blob called bolus the bolus then goes to the esophagus
THE
ESOPHAGUS
• The esophagus is a 25 centimeter tube that connects the mouth
to the stomach the bolus travels down into the stomach
THE STOMACH
• The stomach is an organ and the bolus goes inside of it the stomach breaks down all
the bolus making it into smaller chunks after three hours in the stomach the bolus
turns into a frothy liqud called chyme and it moves into the small intestine
THE SMALL
INTESTINE
• The small intestine is a loosely coiled tube in the abdomen. The small intestine
countinues the process of breaking down food using enzyems and bile then the
chyme goes towards the large intestine
THE LARGE INTESTINE
(COLON)
• The leftover water fiber and dead cells make it to the large intestine the large
intestine absorbs the water and whats leftover is a soft brown mass called stool
THE RECTUM
• The waste goes into the rectum and nerves sense it expanding the body expels the
waste and the foods long journey is finally over

•Fact 2 It takes about 7 seconds for food to travel down the esophagus
•Fact 3 If the small intestine was spread out it would be 22 feet long
