Dispersion
The separation of white light into a spectrum of
colors is called dispersion.

The violet light is refracted more than red light.

Dispersion of light
A prism will separate white light into the colors of the
visible light spectrum. Water vapor in the atmosphere
can also break apart wavelengths creating a rainbow.
Rainbows
• A rainbow is a spectrum formed
when sunlight is dispersed by water
droplets in the atmosphere.
• Sunlight that falls on a water droplet
is refracted.
• Each color has a different frequency
so they are all refracted differently
resulting in dispersion.

Although each droplet produces a complete spectrum, an

observer positioned between the Sun and the rain will see
only a certain frequency of light from each droplet.

The rainbow we see depends on the relative position of the
Sun, the droplets, and the observer.

So technically no two people can see the same rainbow at the

same time.

Explain why white light splits into the different colors when
it goes through a prism ?

• Because when light travel through two different

transparent mediums it will bend or refract to result
in spectrum of light consists of seven colors
White light appears white, it is made up of the colors of rainbow. The
colors can be separated by shining light through a prism, or a triangular
glass object. This separation is called dispersion. This can be observed
in a rainbow , when sunlight is refracted by droplets of water.
