A Detailed Lesson Plan about Light

I. Objectives:
At the end of a 45-minute class interaction, 85% of the students should be able to:
A. describe the properties and characteristics of light;
B. identify the properties of light from different phenomena on one’s own
environment; and
C. give one’s own example of real-life applications of properties of life.

K to 12 Standards Addressed:
 Content Standard
Some properties and characteristics of visible light
 Performance Standard
Discuss phenomena such as rainbow and broken pencil using the concept of properties of
visible light.
 Learning Competency
Demonstrate the existence of the color components of visible light using a prism or
diffraction grating.
Show the hierarchy of colors from diffraction grating.
II. Subject Matter:
A. Characteristics and Properties of Light
B. Concept: How light travels, bends, reflects and enables human to see different
colors?

III. Learning Tasks:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Routine
Good Morning Class… Good Morning Ma’am/Sir!

Let us pray first… (One student will lead the prayer)

Let us pray…

Please pick up the pieces of paper under (Students will pick up the pieces of paper
your chairs. under their chairs)

Secretary, kindly tell me who are Ma’am, I am glad to report to you that no
absent and excused for today. one is absent or excused for today.

It’s nice to hear that everybody is

present for today. Thank you,
(student’s name).

How’s your day? It’s great Ma’am/Sir!

Did you do some reading about our next Yes Ma’am/Sir. We read some books and
topic? articles about it.”

Very good!
How about our topic last time? Could you Sir/Ma’am, last time, we discussed about
still recall what have we discussed? sounds wherein we investigate the
propagation of sound though different
mediums or to solid, liquid or gas.

That’s right! Thank you, (student’s name). None Ma’am/Sir!

So is anything still unclear for about our
last topic?

If none, let’s proceed to our lesson for

today.
B. Motivation:

Who in here, loves to watch the (students raise their hands)

television?
How many dimensions do we usually see (One student will answer)
in the television? Ma’am/Sir, I guess it is usually two-
(teacher calls a name of volunteer student) dimensional.

Very good, (name of the student)!

But do you know that there is a much (students listen attentively)
cooler way to watch our favorite movies,
TV shows and drama series?
Could somebody please turn off the
lights? Thank you.

Using this 2D image and an improvised

material, I will show to you how (students listen attentively)
holograms work. I want you to guess who
the cartoon characters that will be flashed
are in 3D image.
So, are you all ready to see the magic of Yes Ma’am/Sir!
Science?

C. Presentation: (One student will answer)

Based from what you have done, and from Ma’am, I guess our topic for today is all
the advance reading that you did, can you about light.
guess what our topic will be?

Good guess (name of the student).

Together let’s learn what light is? Yes teacher…

Have you ever tried to look around your (One student will answer)
room after turning off the lights at night? Yes ma’am. At first it is hard to recognize
What did you experience? object in the dark but as time passes, my
eyes seemed to adjust to the darkness and
begin recognizing different objects.
Do you see any color when it is totally No ma’am. It is only when light is turned
dark around you? on and I can clearly see every color in my
room.

Very good observation…(name of the (students listen attentively)

student)
D. Discussion

To discover what concept is behind that (students listen attentively)

observation, let us now discuss the
properties and characteristics of light.

What do you think will happen if I point (one student will answer,)
the flashlight into the mirror? Ma’am/Sir, the mirror will reflect the light
into the opposite direction.

What property of light was presented in Based on what I have read, the property of
this action? light that was shown in the situation is
reflection.
So what is reflection? Reflection is the turning back of light into
the same medium after striking a surface.
Very Good, (student’s name). You’ve
done a good job in studying our next
lesson.

There are two kinds of reflection.

Reflection from smooth surfaces is called
regular reflection while reflection from
rough surfaces is called diffused (students listen attentively)
reflection. These kinds of reflection obey
two laws. First law states that the angle of
incidence is equal to the angle of
reflection. (<A=<B)
Second law states that the incidence ray,
normal and reflected ray lie in one plane.

<A <B

Are you familiar with a broken stick Yes, ma’am/sir!

phenomenon?
(The teacher demonstrates the broken-
stick phenomenon by placing a pencil in a
glass half-filled with water.)
What property of light was presented? The pencil looks broken because of
refraction, wherein there is a change in the
direction of light when it passes from one
medium to another of different optical
density.

Like reflection, refraction also obeys two

laws.
1. The incident ray, the refracted ray
and the normal lie in one plane.
2. When a ray of light passes
obliquely from an optically denser
medium to less dense medium, it is
refracted away from the normal
line; when a ray of light passes
obliquely from an optically less
dense medium to denser medium,
it is refracted towards the normal
line.

How is a rainbow possible? (One student will answer)

Ma’am/Sir, I only know that rainbow
usually appears in the sky after the rain.
Yes it is! But this is how it actually works.
(The teacher will point the flashlight into
a disc and projects its reflection on a
white surface.)
What have you observed? (One student will answer)
Upon pointing the flashlight into a disc,
the white light was dispersed into
different colors. This phenomenon is
called diffraction wherein the dispersion
of light in an opaque body makes the
components of white light visible.

What colors were reflected? The white light was dispersed into
ROYGBIV.(red, orange, yellow, blue,
Now that you are already familiar with the green, indigo, violet)
properties of light, let us proceed to its
characteristics.
There are three characteristics of light
wave; 1. Amplitude, 2. Frequency, and 3.
Wavelength. (Students listen attentively)
Amplitude is the maximum distance the
medium (the material through which a
wave travels) moves away from its rest
position. The higher the wave moves up-
and-down as it vibrates, the larger the
amplitude of the resulting waves.
Frequency is the number of cycles per unit (Students listen attentively)
of time.
Wavelength is the distance between two
consecutive crests or troughs.

E. Generalization

Can anyone tell the class what are the (One student will answer)
properties of light and cite his/her own Light has three properties-reflection,
example? refraction and diffraction. Reflection is the
turning back of light into the same medium
after striking a surface and an example of
this property is the reflection of the images
we see in the mirror. The second one is
refraction, wherein there is a change in the
direction of light when it passes from one
medium to another of different optical
density and this can be applied in fishing.
The last one is diffraction, which is
commonly observed at a phenomenon like
rainbow.
Very well said! You have really
understood our topic for today.

Valuing/Application
If there is no light, what will happen to (One student will answer…)
the world? If there is no light, the creatures in this
world will cease to exist. Colors won’t be
known and appreciated and there will only
be darkness.
