MRS.RESHMA AJAY,
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
GAMETOGENESIS
• gametogenesis is the process of male and female
gamete in gonads.
• SPERMATOGENESIS:
• It is the process of formation of spermatozoa in testis.
• spermatogonia cells (46xy) are produced by successive
mitotic divisions from primary germ cells.
• spermatogenesis takes place in a 4 cycles of cell
division, totaling 64 days for spermatogenesis.
• 1 st cycle: two primary spermatocytes develop from
spermatogonium( by mitosis).
• 2nd cycle: from primary spermatocytes, two secondary
spermatocytes are formed by meiosis I.
• 3rd cycle: from two spermatocytes, four spermatids are
formed by meiosisII.
• 4th cycle- from four spermatids, four sperm cells are
produced, which are released into lumen of seminiferous
tubules.
.
OOGENESIS
It is the process of formation of mature ovum(egg) in ovary.
• primordial cells or oogonia cell (46xx) lie in the cortex of
the ovary.
• Oogonium is converted to primary oocyte by arrested
meiotic division occuring in foetal life.
• each primary oocyte is surrounded by a layer of
granulosa cells- primordial follicle.
• the meiosis division is completed 36- 48 hours before
ovulation, and secondary oocyte is formed with discharge
of first polar body.

• 2nd meiotic division starts in secondary oocyte and
there is discharge of ovum(secondary oocyte).
• OVULATION: it is the process of discharge of
secondary oocyte from the mature graafian follicle in
the ovary.
STEPS OF CONCEPTION:
• sperm ejaculation and transport
• fallopian transport.
• fertilization
