ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE (AI)
What is AI ?
Ai or artificial intelligence is an area of computer science that aims at creating
intelligent machines that work and react like humans . The term AI has become
more common because of advanced computing , complex algorithms, and the
ability to store huge volume of data . With the help of AI , a digital or a robot can
be made to perform tasks that are commonly associated with human intelligence .
Now , the question arises
Who coined the term AI and where ?
John McCarthy, a professor emeritus of computer science at Stanford, was the
man who coined the term “artificial intelligence” and subsequently went on to
define the field for more than five decades .invented the first programming
language for symbolic computation, LISP (which is still used as a preferred
language in the field of AI), and invented and established time-sharing .
TYPES OF AI

Ai is basically of two types –

• Weak AI – This is also known as narrow AI . In this type of
AI , the system is designed only to perform a particular task
.
• Strong AI – In this form of AI , the system is designed in
such a manner that it is able to think, reason and perform
like humans . So this form of AI is able to find a solution to
a problem without human intervention.

Weak AI
APPLICATIONS OF AI

1. Retail – Personalized recommendations can be obtained for shopping or

purchase options can be discussed with the consumer using AI .
2. Natural language processing (NLP) – Using AI , we can devlop computers
that can analyse , understand , and communicate in human language . Hence ,
we can develop and use automated online assistants that can solve simple
problems .
3. Robotics – Some AI- based robots that can teach students subjects like biology
and computer science have been developed . Such robots will find significant
applications in the field of education in near future . Several countries such as
China , Japan , and United States use AI based robots in heavy industries for
jobs that are either too mechanical or too dangerous for humans or for those
jobs that must be performed repeatedly.Even NASA uses AI based robots to
move large objects to space.
4. Gaming – While designing games AI is used to decide
the behaviour of different characters in a computer game
on the basis of how a player performs. Certain AI based
toys can understand and hold simple conversations with
young children as well .
5. Self driving – the development of self driving cars
that utilize computer vision and object recognisation
along with intelligent software control has become
possible in AI. Such driverless cars can drive in one
lane and help avoid accidents.
6. Healthcare – Personalized medicines can be obtained
through AI based personal healthcare assistant. These
recommend a diet plan for the users and also give a
reminder to take medicine and exercise. IBM Watson
is one such AI based health assistant.
7. Education – AI technology has the
capability to change where and how students
learn. AI tutors can provide additional support
to students, adapt to their needs, and help them
to work at their own pace. Using AI, grading
students and checking answer sheets can also
be automated.
8. Banking – Fraudulent transactions can be
identified using AI and data management task
in a bank can be automated with accuracy and
speed.
9. Defence – AI is used extensively by the
security forces for a variety of purposes.
ADVANTAGES OF AI
• AI drives down the time taken to perform a task. It enables multi-
tasking and eases the workload for existing resources.
• AI enables the execution of hitherto complex tasks without
significant cost outlays.
• AI operates 24x7 without interruption or breaks and has no
downtime
• AI augments the capabilities of differently abled individuals
• AI has mass market potential, it can be deployed across industries.
• AI facilitates decision-making by making the process faster and
smarter.
DISADVANTAGES OF AI
• AI is updating every day the hardware and software need to get
updated with time to meet the latest requirements. Machines need
repairing and maintenance which need plenty of costs.
• AI is making humans lazy with its applications automating the
majority of the work.
• AI is replacing the majority of the repetitive tasks and other works with
robots, human interference is becoming less which will cause a major
problem in the employment standards.
• AI cannot develop a bond with humans which is an essential attribute
when comes to Team Management
• AI can perform only those tasks which they are designed or
programmed to do.
AI IN THE WORLD OF
BUSINESS
Artificial Intelligence can automate tasks with high
precision and accuracy. Organizations can generate more
business value and revenue by automating work
involving high volumes of communication which is
inherently repetitive, time-consuming, and affects process
efficiency.
AI-powered Intelligent Process Automation solutions can
help with end-to-end automation of work processes. AI-
based automation in different industries can save time,
money, and resources due to its immense benefits. Some
major companies in field of AI Google, IBM,Data Robot
inc.,
Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia,Intel,Tata
Exlsi etc.
AI IN THE WORLD OF
GAMING
AI in gaming refers to responsive and adaptive video game
experiences. These AI-powered interactive experiences are
usually generated via non-player characters, or NPCs, that
act intelligently or creatively, as if controlled by a human
game-player. AI is the engine that determines an NPC’s
behavior in the game world.

While AI in some form has long appeared in video games, it

is considered a booming new frontier in how games are both
developed and played. AI games increasingly shift the
control of the game experience toward the player, whose
behavior helps produce the game experience.
AI procedural generation, also known as procedural
storytelling, in game design refers to game data being
produced algorithmically rather than every element being
AI IN THE WORLD OF
BANKING
AI and Intelligent Process Automation
help banks gain a competitive advantage.
With AI-driven automation, banks are
leveraging machine capabilities to
enhance operations, scale, and cut costs.
Digital Employees can automate parts of
the customer service by handling account,
loan, or card related inquiries, and help
organize bank statements, property
documents, salary slips, financial papers,
and assist loan officers with
documentation.
AI IN THE FIELD OF
DEFENCE
Artificial intelligence has infiltrated practically every
civilian industry imaginable. It has changed the way people
and businesses work, and it is now swiftly becoming a
necessary component of modern combat.
One of the criteria that determines how powerful a country is
the strength of its army. When compared to other parts,
investment in this industry is the largest in some of the most
developed countries. A significant portion of this investment
is dedicated to rigorous research and development in current
technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) in military
applications. AI-enabled military devices are able to
efficiently handle large amounts of data. Furthermore, due to
their enhanced computation and decision-making skills, such
technologies have improved self-regulation, self-control, and
self-actuation.
AI IN WORLD OF
EDUCATION
AI has already been applied to education primarily in some
tools that help develop skills and testing systems. As AI
educational solutions continue to mature, the hope is that AI
can help fill needs gaps in learning and teaching and allow
schools and teachers to do more than ever before. AI can
drive efficiency, personalization and streamline admin tasks
to allow teachers the time and freedom to provide
understanding and adaptability—uniquely human capabilities
where machines would struggle. By leveraging the best
attributes of machines and teachers, the vision for AI in
education is one where they work together for the best
outcome for students. Since the students of today will need to
work in a future where AI is the reality, it’s important that
educational institutions expose students to and use the
technology.

Kong-based company Hanson Robotics.Sophia was activated
on February 14, 2016,and made her first public appearance in
mid-March 2016 at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin,
Texas, United States.Sophia has been covered by media around
the globe, and has participated in many high-profile interviews.
In October 2017, Sophia was given Saudi Arabian citizenship,
and became the first robot to receive citizenship of any
country. In November 2017, Sophia was named the United
Nations Development Programme’s first Innovation Champion,
and is the first non-human to be given a United Nations title.

CONCLUSION
AI is at the centre of a new enterprise to build computational models of
intelligence. The main assumption is that intelligence (human or otherwise) can be
represented in terms of symbol structures and symbolic operations which can be
programmed in a digital computer. There is much debate as to whether such an
appropriately programmed computer would be a mind, or would merely simulate
one, but AI researchers need not wait for the conclusion to that debate, nor for the
hypothetical computer that could model all of human intelligence. Aspects of
intelligent behaviour, such as solving problems, making inferences, learning, and
understanding language, have already been coded as computer programs, and
within very limited domains, such as identifying diseases of soybean plants, AI
programs can outperform human experts. Now the great challenge of AI is to find
ways of representing the commonsense knowledge and experience that enable
people to carry out everyday activities such as holding a wide-ranging
conversation, or finding their way along a busy street. Conventional digital
computers may be capable of running such programs, or we may need to develop
new machines that can support the complexity of human thought.
