Main Characteristics of management
Continuous and never ending process - management is
considered as a process because a manager plans, organizes,
directs and controls all activities of the organization
continuously.

Getting things done through people – the activities of the firm

are being done by the workers not just the manager himself.

Result oriented – gives importance to the “best outcome” of

its activities.

Multidisciplinary in nature – deals with people of different

emotions, feelings and aspirations. Uses knowledge from
many different subjects to understand the diverse workforce.
A group and not an individual activity – uses employees’
efforts to achieve group objectives.

Follows established principles or rules – follows recognized

principles, like division of work, discipline, unity of command
and other relevant rules and principles.

Aided but not replaced by computers – computers can merely

help management but not replace it because management takes
the final responsibility. Management is supported, but not
substituted by computers.

Situational in nature – the manager studies first the full

present situation prior to drawing conclusions about situation,
then he make plans, decisions, rules and procedure which are
the best for the present situation.
Need not be an ownership – in small organization; management
and ownership are one and identical. However, in large
organizations, management is different from ownership.

Both an art and science – it is an art because it requires

creativity and ingenuity in the practical application of skills and
techniques. It is also science because it uses body of facts and
truths in its systematic operation.

Management is all pervasive – it is not only for running

business, it’s a must for all activities like in education, charities
and religious institutions.

Management is intangible – cannot be seen and touched

however it can be sensed and understood by its results.
Uses a professional approach in work – managers’ uses
professional tactic for getting the work done from their
subordinates.

Dynamic in nature – must be creative and innovative, an

organization will survive and succeed only if it is self-
motivated and flexible.
