BATANES

HISTORY
• Batanes is an archipelagic province in the
Philippines, administratively part of the Cagayan
Valley region. It is the northernmost province in the
country, and also the smallest, both in population
and land area.
• The capital is Basco, located on the island of Batan.
It is known for its scenic waters and terrain and
clean environment. Batanes is also recognized for
the unique culture of the islands' first settlers, the
Ivatans. Batanes is open for swimming, snorkeling,
diving, lighthouse visits, biking, and visits to
century-old Ivatan houses.
HOW TO GET THERE

to Batanes is to bus which costs ₱700

way to get from Manila to Batanes is
to train and fly which costs ₱1,400 -
₱6,000 and takes 3h 13m.

ATTRACTIONS
MALBORO HILLS

• It is the iconic hills and ocean view in Batanes.


Racuh A Payaman is the real name of the area,
however this tourist spot is now known as Marlboro
Hills because one tourist said “It looks like the
Marlboro Country.” From that day, Racuh A Payaman
is also known as the Marlboro Hills.

MORONG BEACH

• The Valugan Boulder Beach is a three-

hills.

MT. CARMEL CHAPEL
OR TUKON CHURCH
• Mt. Carmel Chapel, also known as Tukon
Church, was first established on May 3, 2008.
• Located at Sitio Tukon, Barangay Chanarian,
Batanes.

• Local craftsmen, masons and carpenters built


the church, whose design is inspired by the
traditional Ivatan stone houses (stacking and
bonding boulders to make a wall).
SABTANG
• The only lighthouse on Sabtang Island greets LIGHTHOUSE

lighthouses, but the Sabtang Lighthouse stone
walls are left in its natural state. The beam

TAYID
LIGHTHOUSE
• Tayid Lighthouse is located in Mahatao, on
the other side of Batan Island.
• Built around the same time as Basco
Lighthouse, this structure faces the Pacific
Ocean and is best seen from the Rakuh a
Payaman.
• The Tayid Lighthouse has a hexagonal tower
deck.
• Note that you will have to register at
Mahatao registration area just beside
San Carlos Borromeo Church. Here, a
fee of Php 50/pax should be settled.
HOUSE OF DAKAY
• House of Dakay is said to be the oldest stone
house existing in Batanes and
considered as a UNESCO Heritage Building.
• Located in the town of San Jose de Ivana in
Batan Island, the structure has remained
intact over the years.
• It has been constructed very strongly of lime
and stone for protection that will last from
storm and strong winds in the island which is
located along the typhoon belt.
CHAWA VIEW
DECK
• Chawa View Deck is one of South Batan Island's top parts in
Batanes. The view deck was designed overlooking the West
Philippine Sea on a mountainside between the towns of
Basco and Mahatao.

• Located in Mahatao, Batanes.

• An area overlooking breathtaking landscapes, is one of the


top tourist attractions in South Batan Island in Batanes.
IVANA CHURCH
• The San Jose de Obrero Church, popularly
known as the Ivana Church, is a Roman
Catholic church dedicated to Saint Joseph
in Ivana, Batanes. It is under the authority
of the Batanes Prelature.
• In 2008, the National Historical
Commission of the Philippines designated
the church as a National Historical
Landmark.
• The church also includes a
distinctive bell tower
supported by crenelated
buttresses.
