THE CANADIAN
EDUCATIONAL
SYSTEM
WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?

• In a democracy people voice their

opinions by voting on important issues
and/or who they think should lead the
government.
WHAT DOES DEMOCRACY MEAN IN
CANADA?
• Canada is a representative
democracy; This gives each citizen the
right to elect representatives at each
level of the government (federal,
provincial or territorial, and municipal).
These people make all the decisions
and laws for the country.
• In a representative democracy, people
don't vote, but pick representatives to
vote for them.
• Canada is considered a "Full
Democracy".
CANADA'S
BACKGROUND
• Canada is in North America; Canada
is bordered by Alaska in West and by
twelve US states in south.
• Canada was founded July 1, 1867, so as
a country it is 153 years old.
• As of 2021, Canada's population is about
38 million people.
• Canada has 9.985 million km² of land,
but about 90% of the population live
within 150 miles (241km) away from
the United States border.
RESOURCES IN CANADA

• Energy resources in Canada include natural gas, crude

oil, crude bitumen (oil sands) and coal.
• Mineral resources include gold-silver, nickel-copper,
copper-zinc, lead-zinc, iron, molybdenum, uranium,
potash and diamonds. Timber reserves include timber
stocks that are physically accessible and available for
harvesting.
•  Canada's main export is Crude petroleum (crude oil).
Crude oil is used to propel vehicles, to heat buildings,
and to produce electricity.
CANADIAN
GOVERNMENT
• Canada is a Parliamentary Democracy. This
system of government is which citizens
elect representatives to a legislative
parliament to make the necessary laws and
decisions for the country.
• Canada doesn't have a president but has
a prime minister. Canada's prime minister
is Justin  Trudeau (since 2015)
•  The Queen of Canada is Queen Elizabeth
II (since 1952)
CANADIAN POLITICS

•  Canada is a constitutional
monarchy, which means that they
recognize the Queen or King as
the Head of the State, while the
Prime Minister is the Head of the
Government.
CANADIAN VOTING
• In Canada you must be at least 18 to vote and be a Canadian citizen.
• You can vote by mail, and vote on election day at a polling station.
    The voting process
• Everyone must show proof of their identity and address.
• Each voter gets a ballot from the Elections Canada officers.
• The voter takes the ballot behind a voting screen and marks an X beside the name of their chosen candidate.
• The voter places their ballot in a ballot box.

Counting and results

• Election officers open the ballot boxes and count the ballots.
• The officers record the number of votes for each candidate on a Statement of the Vote. They also record the number of
rejected ballots.
• The ballots and other election documents are sealed in the ballot box and delivered to the returning officer.
CANADIAN VOTING
SYSTEM
• Canada's voting system sometimes is
referred to as a "first past the post"
system, is more accurately referred to as
a Single Member Plurality system. The
candidate with the most votes in an
election  wins a seat in the House of
Commons and represents that riding as
its member of parliament.
THE CANADIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM
• In Canada children start preschool between 4-5 years old. In the first years of school
usually called kindergarten, students start the school year at the age of 5 or 6 years old.
• Students usually finish elementary and start middle school in grade 5- 7 at the age of
10-13 years old.
• Highschool in Canada starts from grade 9-12. These are the last years of compulsary
education.
• School is compulsory from ages 6-16/18
• All public schools are free for all students. Private schools in Canada can cost
anywhere between 4,000 CAD (2,977 USD) to 26,000 CAD (19,349 USD) in tuition
