Pandanggo is a Filipino folk  dance

that has become popular in rural areas
of the Philippines. The dance evolved
from fandango, a Spanish folk dance,
which came to the Philippines during
the Spanish conquest .

Fandango is a lively partner dance

originating from Portugal and Spain
usually in triple meter. Traditionally
accompanied by guitars, castanets, or
hand- clapping.

This dance, along with the jota, became

popular among the ilustrados or the upper
class and later, it was adopted by the local
communities.

Jota is a courtship
dance traditional in
northern Spain,
particularly Aragon;
also a genre of folk
song that precedes
and accompanies the
dance or is sung only.

There are many versions of the dance and each

locality has its own version. Local dancers have
many ways of performing pandango, but there
is one thing in common between the different
versions: they have figures that are happy and
energetic. It can be danced at any gathering
and is usually accompanied by applause.

In some places, there are musicians who do not

stop playing until four or five couples have
danced, one after the other. When one pair
gets tired, another pair takes over until no one
can dance. The musicians play faster and faster
after each repetition until the dancers are
exhausted.

Two of the most popular versions of

pandanggo, as a performance art , are the light
pandanggo from Mindoro and the oasioas. The
lighting dance originated in Pulo ng Lubang,
Mindoro, which involves the balancing
of candle lights by dancers.

Another Filipino folk dance, Cariñosa , uses

pandango as its base dance. Pangdango is still
danced by many people but mostly in religious
rituals and processions such as Pangdangguhan
sa Pasig, during the procession of Santa
Martha, and the Obando Dance with shelter for
couples who cannot have children.

As the fandango in Spain was replaced by the

modern version, flamenco, the pandango
developed into a popular folk dance, and
became a ritual dance in many religious
processions in the Philippines.
