TENNIS
- A game played between
two players or between two
teams of two players.

HISTORY OF TENNIS:
•Most historians agree that the French originated tennis during the 11 th century and 12th century.
The French called it jeu de paume, meaning game of the palm.

•Major Walter Clopton Wingfield of England is considered the father of MODERN TENNIS.
He introduced the sports – then called “law tennis”.

•Sphairistike, the Greek word for “playing the ball”.

•Major Harry Gem played a form of tennis in 1860’s.

THE COURT:
▪ Tennis is played on a rectangular, flat

LINES

STARTING THE MATCH
Player or team will spin their rackets and the winnerof the spin will have
some options to choose:
▪ To serve or to receive
▪ The side of the court
▪ Or defer their choice to to their opponent- but the opponent cannot
deffer back.

PLAY OF A SINGLE POINT
- Players or teams start on opposite sides of the net. One
is the server and the opposing player is the receiver.
- Service alternates between the two halves of the court

LET SERVICE
▪ The ball hits the net but lands in the service box.It is
void and server gets to retake the serve.
▪ FOOT FAULT
- Occurs when a player’s foot touches the baseline or an
extension of the center mark before the ball is hit.

DOUBLE FAULT
▪ If the second service is fault then the receiver wins the
point.
▪ RALLY- legal services start with a rally, which players
alternate hitting the ball across the net.

SCORING A GAME:
▪ 0 points= LOVE • Ad-in = advantage
▪ 1 point= 15 • Ad-out= advantage
▪ 2 points= 30
▪ 3 points= 40
▪ Tied score= all
▪ 40-40= Deuce

Game Point
▪ Occurs in tennis whenever the player who is the lead in
the game needs only one more point to win the game.
BREAK POINT
▪ Occurs if the receiver, not the server, has a game point.

JUNIORS
▪ Any player under the age of 18 who is
still legally protected by a parent or
guardian.
▪ They are still eligible to play in junior
tournament.

HOW TENNIS IS PLAYED
▪ Before they begin to play tennis, the players must decide who serves first
and which end of the court each player or team will defend. Some players
make these decisions by means of a racket “toss”. For example, markings
on one side as “tails.” One player stands the racket upright on the frame
they may use the manufacturer’s and spins it. The opposing player or
team calls which side will land face up. Others call on the toss of a coin.
If the call is correct, the layer or team may either choose to serve or
receive first or decide which end of the court to defend.

“punching” motion.
▪ Lob- used as either offensive or defensive weapon.
▪ Overhead smash- a hard, serve-like shot.

BASIC RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. SERVER AND RECEIVER
- The player who first delivers the bal shall be called the server
and the other the receiver.
