What is Essential
oil?
A natural oil typically obtained by
distillation and having the characteristic
odour and the properties of the plant or
other source from which it is extracted.
An essential oil is a concentrated
hydrophobic liquid containing volatile
aroma compound from plants.
What is Semecarpus
Anacardium?
 Semecarpus anacardium, commonly
known by different names such as
Bibba, Bhilwa, Ballataka etc is a close
relative of the cashew nut.

 It is the most valuable plant in world

of Ayurweda to treat the various
diseases and other property like
antioxyent,
Methodology

Extraction of the juice from Extraction of juice from fruit
the pericarp
Extraction of juice from the pericarp
Cut the pericarp but did not penetrate the kernel.

Separate the kernel and extract the oil in soxhlet with ether, here we
get 21% of thick, dark oil.

Similar operation can done with cold light petroleum but here we get
20% dark extract.

Then extract is distillate in reduced pressure(5-7mm) gives yield of

4.5-6% of pale yellow oil boiling at 240-243°C
Extraction of juice from fruit
In this method the whole fruit(pericarp & kernel) is crushed.

Extract the pasty mass with light alcohol

Remove the solvent and shake the residue several time with cold alcohol

After separating the alcoholic extract, remove the alcohol and shake the dark
residue three times with its own volume of water

Distillate the residue under pressure, we get 4.5-6% yield of pale yellow oil
boiling under 247-250°C

Conclusion
Semcarpus anacardium is a one of most important medicinally important plant
which may be use as alternatives of medicine.

There are two methods for extraction of essential oil, by taking recovery as
concern we choose to go with whole seed rather than only pericarp.

 FTIR, GC & HPTLC are use to confirm the compound present in essential oil
