Improved Productivity
• The 4-day workweek could positively impact the workplace according to a research conducted
on more than 500 employees, who currently work a 5-day work week, across 50 states in the
USA. The research finds that more than 69% of the people think that a 4-day work week
would be beneficial to them and 44% of them strongly agree that it would increase their
productivity. The shortened workweek reduces work related stress levels, improves happiness
among the employees and also would reduce the number of sick days availed by employees.
Employees also tend to use their time more efficiently and spend less time on inefficient tasks
• A shorter work week can incentivize workers to be more focused and strategic about their
time management during the week.
An Equal Workplace
• Also, a 4-day work week could increase the supply of workers significantly. A research on
Gender Pay Gap suggests that more than 2 million women are currently not employed
because of the responsibility they have to raise the children. A 4-day workweek, regardless of
gender, would provide the employees with additional day that they could spend with their
children and family. This would improve the gender diversity and provide equal opportunities
for both the genders at a workplace and promotes an inclusive workplace.
Improved employee retention
• 4-day workweek could act as a solution to the great attrition problem which
was an effect of the pandemic. The pandemic caused burnout to the people
which ultimately reduced the employee engagement and caused the great
resignation. 4-day workweek could improve employee retention as they would
have better work-life balance. It could also improve the employee morale and
satisfaction as they get to spend more time with their families, could engage in
social activities or could spend time on personal development.
Reduced Costs and Environmental Benefits
• Another important benefit to the company would be reduced costs.
Lower number of workdays would mean reduced overhead costs
including lower electricity, utility costs, food and other expenses for
the company. It could also reduce the commuting costs. The
shortened work week also would mean reduced carbon emissions as
work related travel is a major contributor to the carbon footprint,
thus ultimately benefitting the environment.
Improved Employer Branding and
Recruitment
• A 4-day work week would be appealing to job searchers and could
help the company recruit new talents and provides a reason for them
to stay in the company. Also Highly qualified professionals tend to
work in companies that provide them with autonomy and time which
helps them to take care of outside obligations as well. It could also
improve the branding of the company as it nurtures a culture that
focuses on the mental well being and satisfaction of the employees as
well.
