Thomas Edison
• Thomas Edison was an
American inventor that
devloped DC, direct
electric current. He figured
it was the best way to
generate electricity. Direct
electric current is
electricity that runs in a
single direction.
George Wesington
• George Wesington was another
American inventor, who created AC,
alternating current, which reverses
the direction a certain number of
times per second and can be easily
converted.
Pros and Cons of DC
• Pros: • Cons:
• -DC electricity has simpler power units, • -DC electricity only moves in one
which means less maintenance and less direction and can't travel very long
costs. distances without costing too much.
-It is easier to change the speed of a DC • -DC electricity can't be converted easily
current
• -It is easier to store DC electricity than
AC.
Pros and Cons of AC
• Pros: • Cons:
• -AC electricity is easy to convert • -AC electricity need for insulation; is
• -AC electricity supplies better lighting more dangerous than DC
• -AC electricity is inexpensive • -AC electricity is harder to store
• -AC electricity can travel long distances and
can go in multiple directions
• AC electricity is generated relatively easily and
has can produce high voltages.
Today's electrical system
• Today's electrical system
mainly composes of AC
electricity because it can
travel long distances. DC can
also travel long distances, but
it would be too costly to be
use as a common way of
getting power. But, DC is still
used as well because it's
better for direct power
distribution.
The 2011 Tsunami
• The Fukushima Nuclear Power
Plant costed over billions of
dollars to fix. The nuclear
complex was damaged in a
series of events after the 2011
earthquake and tsunami that
struck the nation.
