Operating System A program that controls the execution of all other programs. Instructions in the OS tell the computer how to perform the functions of loading, storing and executing an application and how to transfer data. For the computer to operate, an OS must be stored in the computer memory. When a computer is started, the OS is loaded into the computer and stored in the primary memory. The process is called booting. Operating System Operating System is the prelude of all office operations because this is the avenue where the computers are thought the following: 1. It moderates the relationship between the computer and its peripherals. 2. It helps in the management of files, - copying, deleting, moving of files from one storage location to the other. 3. It encourages the memory for its efficient usage and thus adding the speed of the computer. 4. It manages the activities of the processor in terms of job execution according to the priority of arrival of jobs. 5. It informs the user of any hardware or software issues. Three most common OS for PC Microsoft Windows – Microsoft created the Windows OS in the mid-1980s. There have been many different versions of Windows, but the most recent ones are Windows 11, Windows 10 (release in 2015) Windows 8(2012), Windows 7(2009), and Windows Vista(2007). Windows comes pre-loaded on the most new PC’s which helps to make it the most popular OS in the world. macOS (previously called OS X) is a line of OS’s created by Apple. It comes preloaded on all Macintosh computer, or Macs. Some of the specific versions include Mojave (released in 2018), High Sierra(2017), and Sierra(2016). Linux (pronounced LINN-ux) is a family of open-source OS’s which means they can be modified and distributed by anyone around the world. Steps in Connecting External Peripherals
