How to improve

Female work
participation in India?
Edward de Bono

“Thinking is the ultimate human resource. Yet we can

never be satisfied with our most important skill. No
matter how good we become, we should always want to
be better”
Six thinking hats

In his book "Six Thinking Hats" Edward de Bono presents

a simple but effective way to become a better thinker. He
separates thinking into six distinct modes, identified with
six coloured "thinking hats"
How to improve Female work participation in India?

India is the land of thousands of gods and goddesses

where women are worshiped and various traditions and
festivals celebrate womanhood.
When a woman opts for domestic duties over her career,
she brings multiple social and cultural benefits and
stability to society.
However, the contribution of women in the economy has
generally been ignored. The role and participation of
women as the economic workforce has mostly been
limited.

● Increasing women’s mobility encourages them to continue
their education and participate in the labour force. Three
IGC studies have rigorously assessed the Government of
Bihar’s bicycle programme, which provides girls in grade 9
with money to buy bicycles. Studies found the programme
reduced the gender gap in age-appropriate secondary school
enrolment by 40% and it led to a 32% increase in enrolment of
girls in secondary school, and school dropouts for girls falling
below 5%.

● Soft skills can improve girls’ and women’s educational

and health outcomes. An IGC study in Zambia suggests that
programmes teaching communication and negotiation skills to
girls are perceived positively by participants and may increase
their sense of control over their lives and access to resources.
What do I know?
● Access to microfinance increases female
participation in the labour market in the long run.
An IGC project in India found that greater access to
microfinance loans led to a significant increase in
female labour force participation – with the effect driven
by self-employment and not by salaried jobs.

● Female managers could improve productivity in

garment firms. IGC researchers provided training to
female employees in Bangladeshi garment factories
and found female trainees to be as or more effective
than the male trainees.
Current Scenario

The current scenario of women empowerment is very
disbalanced across the various segments of the society.
Literacy plays a crucial role in promoting women's rights,
achieving empowerment , enhancing the overall livelihood
and social status of women.

Cultural and social norms prevent women from realizing

their full economic potential, and safety concerns restrict
their physical and economic mobility. Additionally, gender
inequities and the lack of enabling conditions in the
workplace make it more difficult for women to actively
participate in the labour market.

workplace can be eradicated with the help of women
empowerment in India.

living of women by peeking at them. You can foresee their

Women are the backbone of the society. She plays a vital role in
the economic development of the country and her contribution
is as equal as their male counterparts. Without active
participation of women in various national, social, economic
and political activities, the progress of the country will be
stagnant. Traditionally, Indian women had been Home makers
but in 21st Century, due to higher education, better awareness
and increasing financial demands of family, women also go out
and choose careers.

Although Indian women have started working outside their

homes, but still there are several issues and challenges that
working women face today. Sometimes they are not treated
equally in their workplace. They do not get the same benefits as
that of male employees too. Gender bias, unequal pay, security,
mental and physical harassment, lack of proper family support,
insufficient maternity leave are considered as major issues and
challenges that working woman faces nowadays.

children, increasing cost of housing properties in India force
every family in India to look for ways and means of increasing
household income.

Today women are giving their best and active contribution in all
the male-dominated fields such as sports, medical, law, military,
academics, politics, bank, top level corporate positions etc. In

works than they did thirty years ago.

For The Same.
What is my suggestion?
The first step in empowering women and increasing their
opportunities is better education and skill-enhancement at
all levels. This includes dissuading drop-outs.

Next, we must strengthen anti-discrimination laws and

promote policies that protect women against workplace
discrimination – both in law and in practice.

Then, we must improve work-place infrastructure in order

to remove entry barriers and attrition. This includes the
provision of toilets, a safe work environment and
adherence to laws pertaining to provision of maternity
support and crèche facilities.

Finally, we must break gender stereotypes which

perpetuate discrimination through changing of attitudes
and perceptions regarding female workers. These
measures will help to increase female labor force
participation.
