Chemical Stoichiometry

.
Example
Find the molar mass of Fe2SO3
Solution
• Identify the elements present in the compound:
Fe
S
O
• Determine the number of atom being shown in each element present in the form
of subscript:
Fe= 2
S= 1
O= 3
Continuation:
• Identify the atomic mass of each element present.
Fe= 2 x 56
S= 1 x 32
O= 3 x 16
Note: To use the atomic mass in whole number we need to look in the
decimal point to base if we round off the whole number or retain the
whole number.
Example:
S= 32.06 (If we see the number after decimal point (being underlined) is
ranging 5 to 9 we will round off the whole number but if it is 4 to 0 we
will retain the whole number.)
• Multiply the number of atoms of each elements to their respective atomic mass:
Fe= 2 x 56= 112
S= 1 x 32= 32
O= 3 x 16= 48
• After that add the product of each element to get its molar mass.
Fe= 2 x 56= 112
S= 1 x 32= 32
O= 3 x 16= 48
192 g/mol.
Another Example
• Find the molar mass of Ca3(PO4)2
Solution:
• It is just like the first example
Ca
P
O
• But in determining the number of atom being present in each element and there
is an open and close parenthesis in the chemical formula the subscript value
outside the open and close parenthesis will be distributed.
Continuation

• Ca3(PO4)2 distribution method

where P= 1 x 2= 2
O= 4 x 2=8
Ca= 3 x 40= 120
P= 2 x 31= 62
O= 8 x 16= 128
310 g/mol.
Mass, number of moles, and molar mass
Formula
Coefficient:
m= mass (g)
n= number of moles (mol.)
MW= molar mass/ molecular weight (g/mol.)

If mass is needed If no. of moles is needed if MW is

needed
m= n x MW n= m MW= m
MW n
Example:
• What is the mass of 0.35 mol. of ferrous sulfate (FeSO4)
Solution:
Solve the molar mass of the compound present
FeSO4
Fe= 1 x 56= 56
S= 1 x 32= 32
O= 4 x 16= 48
136 g/mol.
The molar mass of FeSO4 is 136 g/mol.
Continuation:
• Identify the formula to be used for solving :
m= n x MW
• Replace the value of the coefficients
m= ( 0.35 mol.) x ( 136 g/mol.)
• The answer will be expressed in two decimal places.
m= 47.60 g FeSO4
Another example
How many moles is present in 45 grams of sodium hydroxide, NaOH?
Solution:
• Determine the molar mass of NaOH:
Na= 1 x 23= 23
O= 1 x 16= 16
H= 1 x 1= 1
40 g/mol.
The molar mass of NaOH is 40 g/mol.
Continuation:
• Identify the formula to be used for solving :
n= m
MW
• Replace the value of the coefficient
n= 45 g
40 g/mol.
• The answer will be expressed in two decimal places.
1.125 mol.
n= 1.13 mol.
