This lesson is about how to deal with:
•proverbs and

•types of register.

2
It’s never too much when...
… we bear in mind the importance of the 3 Cs!

3
Proverbs
• A proverb is a short statement, usually known by
many people for a long time.

• Proverbs represent cultural patrimony and provide

us with rich meanings and messages.

4
• Proverbs are very peculiar culturally speaking.

• Translating them literally – worrying only about

syntax – would be an enormous mistake.

They say that no man is an island
And good things come to those who wait
But the things I hear are there just to remind me
Every dog will have his day

Types of register
o Register is the variety a language has according to
any particular purpose or any particular social
setting.

o the choice of register is determined by many factors:

 social occasion,
 purpose and
 audience, among many others.

11
Example:

12

o In general, it is divided into formal and informal
styles, and some authors claim there is the neutral
style as well.

o Martin Joos, though, divides it into five categories:

 static;
 formal;
 consultative,
 casual and
 intimate.

13
o Static = frozen (E.g.: prayer)

o Formal = impersonal (E.g.: announcements)

o Consultative = standard communication

o Casual = conversational (E.g.: neighbors talking)

o Intimate = common knowledge of background

(E.g.: family or friends talking)

INTIMATE

15
STATIC: All visitors are invited to proceed upstairs.

FORMAL: Would everyone kindly proceed upstairs?

CONSULTATIVE: Would you all please go upstairs?

CASUAL: Come on upstairs!

INTIMATE: Come on up!

16
o The five types highly depend on the context they are
being used.

o It is common to use more than two types a day.

o It is possible to use all the five types a day.

o What really matters is they are appropriately being

used.
