August 13, 1889- The Mock Battle of Manila
between American and Spanish forces happened.
Treaty of Paris- America paid Spain an amount of

June 12, 1898- proclaimed the Philippines'
independence in Kawit.
January 4, 1899- American President McKinley sends
a special message to General Otis stating American
sovereignty must be recognized in the Philippines
without conditions
January 23, 1899- drafting the Malolos Constitution
until the inauguration of the Republic.
Malolos Constitution - It creates a Filipino state where
its government is popular, representative, and
responsible.

It also has three distinct branches - the executive, the

legislative, and the judiciary.
Emilio Aguinaldo- Elected as First President of the
First republic until June 1901.
 AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD
The Military Government ( headed by a general,
serving as a chief political executive of an area
under military government) was a temporary
government established by the Americans in the
Philippines at first.

was established by United States President William

McKinley on March 16, 1900. William Howard Taft
was the first head of the Philippine Commission
from March 16, 1900, until July 4, 1901, He also
became the civil governor of the Philippines .

Taft served in that office until January 31, 1904,
when he was appointed Secretary of War by
President Theodore Roosevelt.
