Etienne-Louis Malus

• French Physicist

• He published his discovery of polarization

by double refraction by crystals in 1810.

• Best remembered for Malus' law, giving the

resultant intensity, when a system of
polarizers is placed in the path of an
incident beam.

• He was awarded Rumford Medal by Royal

Society of London in 1810.
Aim: To verify law of Malus

Apparatus:(1) Monochromatic source

of light
(2) Two polarizers with angular scale
from 0-360 degrees
(3) Luxmeter
(4) Metallic tube for mounting
polarizer and analyzer
LAW OF
MALUS
If the light is passed through two
polarizers then the intensity of light
passing through second polarizer is
a cosine square function of the
angle between their optic axis.

𝐼𝜃 = 𝐼𝑚𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝜃
i. The least count of the angular scale on the analyzer = 1 deg ii.
ii. The maximum intensity (at  = 00), 𝐼𝑚=…… lux
