ABOUT SIKKIM
Sikkim is a state in north east India, bordered by
Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Part of the Himalayas, the
area has a dramatic landscape that includes India’s
highest mountain, 8,586m Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is
also home to glaciers, alpine meadows and thousand of
varieties of wild flowers. Steep paths lead to hilltop
Buddhist monasteries such as Pemayangtse, which
dates to the early 1700s. The capital of Sikkim is
Gangtok.
SIKKIM’S CULTURE
MUSIC AND DANCES OF SIKKIM :
Folk songs and dances are an inveterate part of
the Sikkimese culture. Most of the tribal dances
depict the harvest season and they are
performed for prosperity. The dances of Sikkim
are accompanied by traditional musical
instruments, chanting,and the dancers carry
bright costumes and traditional masks. Some of
the most famous dance forms are Rechungma,
Gha To Kito, Chi Rmu, Be Yu Mista, Tashi Zaldha,
Kagyed Dance etc.
ART AND CRAFT OF SIKKIM :

There are a plenty of art and craft forms in Sikkim.


The bulk of the people of the state belong to rural
areas and they have there old tradition of making
several utility objects. One of the most popular
handicraft objects Sikkim includes a choksee table,
wollen carpet, canvas wall hanging, thankas,
delineating painting on various aspects of the state.

The government has setup an institute of Cottage


Industries in Sikkim. Melli, Gangtok and Namchi are
the very popular places of Sikkim for handloom
products and Cottage Industries.

FOOD OF SIKKIM :

The food of the people of Sikkim indicates the culture


of this state which is melange of India, Nepal, Bhutan
and Tibet. Sikkim food mainly comprises noodles,
Gundruk and Sinki soups, thukpas, tomato achar
pickle, traditional cottage
Cheese, fermented soy bean, bambo shoot,
fermented rice product and some other fermented
dishes owing to it’s very cold climate. Rice is ,
however, the staple food of the state. Momos, also
known as dumplings and wantons are favorites
among the Sikkimese people as well as tourists.

FESTIVALS OF SIKKIM :

The Sikkim’s festivals are celebrated with a


lot of pomp and show and as per the
Buddhist calendar. Through out all these
festivals the citizens of Sikkim indulge
vibrant and lively dances and music.
Chaam, one of the most fascinating
musical instruments and takes place at the
different monasteries across Sikkim while
these festivals are on.
Famous festivals of

1. Saga dawa :

Saga Dawa or the triple blessed festival


is an auspicious month for the Sikkimese
Buddhista with prayers held through out
the month in various monastreies. On
the full moon of this 4th month of the
Tibetan calendar [celebrated as Buddha
Purnima in the rest of india] is the main
celebration.
2. Drupka teshi :

Another great festival


celebrated by the Buddhists is
the Drupka Teshi festival. The
festival takes place on the
day the Buddha sermonized
his first oration of four Nobel
Truths to the 5 disciples in
Sarnath at the famous dear
park.
3. Pang lhabsol :
It is unique as it celebrates nature. The
festival and all it’s celebrations are
surrounding the third highest peak in
the world, the kanchenjunga. Besides
celebrating the peak this festival also
honors the treaty signed by Bhutias
and Lepchas where all the local
deities were welcomed to witness
these occasion.celebrated around the
15th day which falls in the seventh
month as per their calendar, end of
August as per the standard calendar.

Tourism in sikkim
1. Tsomgo lake :

Tsomgo lake is also


known as Tsongmo
lake or changu
lake, is a glacial
lake in the East
Sikkim district of
Indian state of
Sikkim, some 40km
from the capital
Gangtok.
2. RUMTEK DHARMA CHAKRA CENTRE
Rumtek Monastery
also called the
Dharma Chakra
centre is a gompa
located in the Indian
state of Sikkim near
the capital Gangtok.
It is the seat-in-exile
of the Gyalwang
Karmapa,
inaugurated in 1966
by the 16th
Karmapa.
3. NATHULA PASS
Nathu La is a mountain
pass in the Himalayas in
East Sikkim district. It
connects the Indian state
of Sikkim with China’s Tibet
Autonomous Region. The
pass at 4,310m above
mean sea level, forms a
part of an offshoot of the
ancient Tea Horse Road.
Nathu means ”listening
ears“ and La means
“pass” in Tibetan.
4. BUDDHA PARK
The Buddha park of
Ravangla, also known
as Tathagata Tsal, is
situated near Rabong in
South Sikkim district,
Sikkim, India. It was
constructed between
2006 and 2013 and
features a 130-
foot(40m) high statue
of the Buddha as it’s
centre piece.

Chief crops grown in Sikkim are wheat, Maize, Barley,
Potato, tea, cardamom, etc.
Sikkim produces highest amount of cardamom in India.
