SIKKIM- A UNQUE LAND
WHAT MAKES SIKKIM UNIQUE ?

•  Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity, including


alpine and subtropical climates.
• As well as being a host to Kangchenjunga, the
highest peak in India and third highest on Earth.
•  Sikkim is a state that is very different from any
other state in India and it enjoys being
distinctive. With Nature marking its presence
here
ABOUT SIKKIM
• Sikkim is a state in northeast India, bordered by
Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Part of the Himalayas,
the area has a dramatic landscape that includes
India’s highest mountain, 8,586m
Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is also home to glaciers,
alpine meadows and thousands of varieties of
wildflowers. Steep paths lead to hilltop Buddhist
monasteries such as Pemayangtse, which dates
to the early 1700s

Is Sikkim part of 7 sisters ?
• The North-Eastern state consists of the seven
sisters.
• This includes Arunachal Pradesh, Assam,
Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and
(which one is 7th?)
• It is quite shocking, Sikkim is not part of the
seven sisters a sit is separated by a chicken neck
corridor or Siliguri corridor.
SIKKIM FOOD
• Sikkimese meals typically
follow a bhat-dal-tarkari-achar
(rice-legume soup-curry-
pickle) pattern. A
boiled rice and lentil soup
containing spices such as
coriander, turmeric, cumin,
and garam masala. It is often
cooked with onion, garlic,
ginger, chilli, tomatoes, or
tamarind and served with a
vegetable called tarkari.
SIKKIM AS ORGANIC STATE

• It is considered as an ‘organic state’ and it is the only


state in India to attain this title.
• The mission to convert Sikkim into organic state is
initiated by its Chief Minster Sh.Pawan Ku.Chamling
in 2003.
SIKKIM CULTURE

• Sikkim is a beautiful land of manifold tribes and


races of people living together. All these diverse
tribes and communities have their unique
features in addition to their particular dance
forms, festivals, languages, culture, and craft
forms. The miscellany of ethnic groups, religion,
and languages is seen all over Sikkim.
SIKKIM LANGUAGE

• Nepali is the primary language of Sikkim while


Lepcha and Sikkimese (Bhutia) are also spoken
in some part of this north-east province. English
is also spoken by the people of Sikkim. Other
languages include Kafle, Limbu, Majhwar,
Yakha, Tamang, Tibetan, and Sherpa.
SIKKIM FESTIVALS

• Sikkim is a state in northeast Asia where


numerous festivals are celebrated throughout
the year. Majority of the people of Sikkim follow
Buddhism so the festival celebrated here are
associated with the Buddhist and they are
celebrated with a lot of pomp and as per the
Buddhist calendar.

SAGA DAWA
• Saga Dawa Festival is the most significant
religious festival in Tibet.
• The Saga Dawa Festival is celebrated on April 15
in Tibetan calendar.
• Saga Dawa festival celebrates the birth of Buddha
• A ritualistic ceremony that commemorates the
major events in the life of Buddha(Saga
Dawa festival is held to honor the wishes of
Buddha on his deathbed.
PHANG LHABSOL
• Pang Lhabsol marks the occasion of honouring
the mountain deity, Mount Kanchenjunga, which
is said to be conferred with the title of the
guardian deity.
•  The festival is celebrated annually on the fifteenth
day of the seventh month of the Tibetan calendar
corresponding to late August or early September.

Buddha Park

The Buddha Park of Ravangla,


also known as Tathagata Tsal, is
situated near Ravangla in 
South Sikkim district of the
Indian state of Sikkim. It was
constructed between 2006 and
2013, and features a 130-foot-
high (40 m) statue of the 
Buddha,
THE SINGSHORE BRIDGE 

The suspension bridge is


situated a few kilometers
away from Uttarey. It is one
of the most popular tourist
spots in West Sikkim. The
bridge is the highest bridge
in Sikkim and the second
highest bridge in Asia.  The
bridge is 650 ft long, 12 ft
wide, and its cable height is
700 ft.
Nathu La Paas
Nathu La is a mountain
pass in the Himalayas
in East Sikkim district.
It connects the Indian
state of Sikkim with
China's Tibet
Autonomous Region.
Traditional Dresses

• Sikkim shows the diversity and exemplifies


social and cultural lives of the three main
resident communities - the Lepchas, Bhutias and
the Nepalis. People from other states like
Biharis, Bengalis, Marwaris, Punjabis and
South-Indians have also settled here and they
follow their own traditional items of clothing.

RIVERS FOUND IN SIKKIM:
• The place also has two main rivers – Teesta
river and Rangeet river.
• As rivers play an important role in our Indian
culture, these rivers in Sikkim also have a lot
to offer. Not only do these rivers irrigate the
plain but also offer adventure activities such as
rafting adding value to the scenic view
of Sikkim.
Teesta River:
• Teesta River, is a 315 km (196 mi) long river
that rises in the eastern Himalayas, flows
through the Indian states of Sikkim and 
West Bengal through Bangladesh and enters the 
Bay of Bengal. In India, it flows through 
Darjeeling district and the cities of Rangpo, 
Jalpaiguri and Mekhliganj. It joins the Jamuna
River at Fulchhari in Bangladesh.
River Teesta:
RANGEET RIVER
• The Rangeet or Rangit is a tributary of the
Teesta river, which is the largest river in the
Indian state of Sikkim. The Rangeet river
originates in the Himalayan mountains in West
Sikkim district. The river also forms the
boundary between Sikkim and Darjeeling
district. Its length is about 80 km.

• In the temperate zone, the flora consist of oak,
chestnut, maple, birch, alder, magnolia and
silver fir...
• There are about 35 species of Rhododendrons
in Sikkim and are found above the height of
10000 feet.
