DIFFERENT TYPES OF
HITCHES, KNOTS AND BENDS
-ORONCE
MARLINESPIKE SEAMANSHIP
TERMS
I. Knots – are used to form eye or to secure a cord or line around an
object, such as a package. In other words, the line is bent to itself.

II. Hitches – are used to bend a line to or around an object, such as a ring,
spar, or stanchion.

III. Bends - are used to secure two lines together.

IV. Splicing - are used to permanently join two lines or to form an eye or
loop in the end of a line.
I. KNOTS – THE LINE IS BENT TO ITSELF.

• OVERHAND KNOT
• The simplest of all knot.
• The overhand knot can be used as a
stopper knot and can keep a rope
from fraying or unraveling but the
Figure Eight is a much better stopper
knot.
I. KNOTS – THE LINE IS BENT TO ITSELF.

• FIGURE EIGHT (FLEMISH KNOT)

• The Figure Eight provides a quick and
convenient stopper knot to prevent a
line sliding out of sight .
• The strongest knot for a loop at the
end of the rope.
Uses: The Figure 8 Bend, or
Flemish Bend provides a safe,
and simple way to join two
ropes. It is reasonably easy to
remember, tie, and check.
I. KNOTS – THE LINE IS BENT TO ITSELF.

• BOWLINE
• rescue knot, most useful of knots
because it forms a secure loop at
the end of the rope that will not slip
and is easy to untie.
• King of all knots.
• It has many uses, e.g., to fasten a
mooring line to a ring or a post.
Uses: The Running Bowline is a
valuable way of tying a type
of noose which will not bind and
can be slid undone easily.
Uses: The Bowline on a Bight
makes a secure loop in the
middle of a piece of rope. It does
not slip or bind.
- It is the knot generally used at
sea for lowering an injured man
from aloft.
The Spanish Bowline is a double loop
knot. Having double loops can be
useful for light rescue work but care
should be taken that the load on the
loops is equal to avoid slipping.
French/ Portuguese bowline
- Bowline with an extra loop
- Adjustable
- Good for hoisting or as a chair
I. KNOTS – THE LINE IS BENT TO ITSELF.

• SHEEP SHANK
• is used to shorten a rope that is
fastened at both ends.
• Must maintain tension
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT

• CLOVE HITCH
• It is a simple knot used to tie a rope
in a post.
• all purposed hitch It is easy to tie
and untie.
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT
• ROLLING HITCH
• USED TO BEND A ROPE AROUND A
SPAR TO SHIFT THE ROPE ALONG
SPAR WITHOUT REMOVING IT
• CAN BE USED AS A STOPPER. but
the Rat-Tail Stopper is better.
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT
• TIMBER HITCH
• USEFUL WHEN TOWING A SPAR OR LOG
EITHER AFLOAT OR ON LAND. WHEN USED
FOR THIS PURPOSE, THE TIMBER HITCH IS
OFTEN PLACED NEAR THE CENTER OF THE
SPAR AND A SEPARATE HALF HITCH IS
DROPPED OVER THE END OF THE SPAR TO
ACT AS A GUIDE. THIS COMBINATION IS
CALLED THE KILLICK HITCH.
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT
• MARLINESPIKE HITCH
• A TEMPORARY KNOT USED TO ATTACH A
ROD TO A ROPE IN ORDER TO FORM A
HANDLE.
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT
• ANCHOR (FISHERMAN’S)
HITCH
•  IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE FISHERMAN'S
HITCH AND IS AN EXCELLENT KNOT TO
USE FOR ATTACHING AN ANCHOR LINE
TO AN ANCHOR.
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT
• ROUND TURN AND TWO
HALF-HITCHES
• IS A HITCH USED TO SECURE THE
END OF A ROPE TO A FIXED
OBJECT.
II. HITCHES – A KNOT TIED AROUND AN
OBJECT
• CONSTRICTOR KNOT
• Makes a very good temporary whipping
or seizing
• Simple but secure, it is a harsh knot that
can be difficult to untie once tightened
• It has been used as a temporary hose
clamp; and it can used to hold items
together for gluing.
III. BENDS - ARE USED TO
SECURE TWO LINES
TOGETHER.
• SQUARE KNOT
• It is used by sailors for reefing and
furling sails.
• The square knot has many uses-from
securing bandages and packages to
joining two ropes together. A square
knot works best when the ropes are
of the same diameter.
III. BENDS - ARE USED TO
SECURE TWO LINES
TOGETHER.
• CARRICK BEND
• is a knot used for joining two lines. It
is particularly appropriate for very
heavy rope or cable that is too large
and stiff to be easily formed into
other common bends.
III. BENDS - ARE USED TO
SECURE TWO LINES
TOGETHER.
• FISHERMAN’S BEND KNOT
• A BEND WITH A SYMMETRICAL
STRUCTURE CONSISTING OF TWO
OVERHAND KNOTS, EACH TIED
AROUND THE STANDING PART OF THE
OTHER.
III. BENDS - ARE USED TO
SECURE TWO LINES
TOGETHER.
• SHEET BEND
• IT IS PRACTICAL FOR JOINING LINES OF
DIFFERENT DIAMETER(SIZE) OR RIGIDITY. IT IS
QUICK AND EASY TO TIE
• STOPPER KNOT
• A type of knot is tied at
the end of a rope to
prevent the end from
slipping through another
knot or passing back
through a hole or block
