1ST GENERATION
OF
COMPUTER
1st Generation Of
Computer
-The first generation of the
computer was dependent upon
the lowest-level programming
language known as machine
language, which was used by
the computer (first-generation)
to perform different kinds of
operations. This was not able
to perform multitasking work
and capable of solving only
one problem at a time.
W h o invented
1st generation
of Computer?
John William M auchly, also called
John
W. M auchly, (born Aug ust 30,
1907, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.—died
January 8, 1980, Ambler,
Pennsylvania), American
physicist and engineer, inventor in
1946.
John Adam Presper Eckert Jr.
(April 9, 1919 – June 3, 1995) was
an American electrical engineer
and computer pioneer. With Joh
n Mauchly, he designed the first
general-purpose electronic digital
computer (ENIAC), presented the
first course in computing topics
(the Moore School Lectures),
founded the Eckert–Mauchly
Computer Corporation, and
designed the first commercial
computer in the U.S., the UNIVAC,
which incorporated Eckert's
invention of the mercury delay-line

The ENIAC(Electronic Numerical
Integrator and Computer) was
programmed with plugboard wiring.
It used punch cards and paper tape
to take input and produce output.

EDSAC stands for (Electronic

Delay Storage Automatic
Calculator). Its a large-scale
electronic calculating machine in
which ultrasonic delay units are
used for storage of orders and
numbers
EDVAC (ELECTRONIC DISCRETE

MACHINES STILL WERE BUILT BY
USING VACUUM TUBES THAT LED TO

INTERNALLY.

UNIVAC STANDS FOR (UNIVERSAL

AUTOMATIC COMPUTER) WAS
ANOTHER STORED PROGRAM MACHINE
OF THE FIRST GENERATION. MAUCHLY
AND ECKERT DESIGNED THIS
COMPUTER, AND IT WAS THE FIRST
SUCCESSFUL COMMERCIAL COMPUTER
ADVANTAGES
THEY WERE ABLE TO CALCULATE DATA IN A
MILLISECOND; ALSO, THEY OFFERED THE
PATHWAY FOR THE GROWTH OF COMPUTER
GENERATIONS. THE FIRST GENERATION OF
COMPUTERS WERE DIFFICULT TO BREAK,
AND AS THEY WERE VERY ROBUST.
ADDITIONALLY, FOR EASIER AND FASTER
IDENTIFICATION OF READINGS, THE COLOR-
CODED FEATURE WAS INCLUDED IN THE FIRST
GENERATION OF COMPUTERS.
DISADVANTAGES
THE FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS WAS
HEAVY IN WEIGHT AS ABOUT 30 TONES AND WAS
VERY LARGE IN SIZE.
THEY CONSUMED HIGH ENERGY.
THE ONLY BIG AND ESTABLISHED
ORGANIZATION WERE CAPABLE OF BUYING
THE FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS AS
THEY WERE MUCH EXPENSIVE.
THEY WERE VERY SLOW AS THEY USED A VERY
NARROW AND INEFFICIENT TECHNIQUE (VACUUM
TUBES).
THEY HAD VERY LESS WORK EFFICIENCY, AND
PUNCH CARDS WERE USED TO TAKE INPUTS IN
