Representation of Functions
Objectives:

1. Represent real-life situations using functions.

2. Represent real-life situation using one-to-one functions

EXERCISE
Directions: Determine whether or not each relation is a function. Put a check on the
space that corresponds your answer.

RELATION
A relation is a set of ordered pairs called the domain and the range. The domain
The range is the set of second coordinates
of a relation is the set of first coordinates.

EXAMPLE:
{(I, 4), (L, 5), (O, 6), (V, 8), (E, 3), (M, 6), (A, 2), (T, 8), (H, 4)}
(𝑥 , 𝑦 )

Domain Range

Domain = {I, L, O, V, E, M, A, T, H} Range = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8}

Note that for each letter of the domain corresponds to exactly one number of the range. This
special kind of relation is called function.
FUNCTION
A function is a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds to
exactly one element of the range.

EXAMPLE:
{(I, 4), (L, 5), (O, 6), (V, 8), (E, 3), (M, 6), (A, 2), (T, 8), (H, 4)}

The members of the domain can be called inputs and the members of the range can be called
outputs. The arrow can be used to describe the correspondence in a function.

Vertical Line Test

A graph represents a

function if and only if
no vertical line
intersects the graph in
more than one point

Function
Linear Function
A function f is a linear function if where m and b are real numbers,
and m and f(x) are not both equal to zero.
EXAMPLE:
To sell more t-shirts, the class needs to charge a lower price as indicated in the table
below: What is the price function of this given data?
Target No. of shirts Price per shirt
sales (x) (y)
500 ₱540
900 ₱460
1,300 ₱380
1,700 ₱300
2,100 ₱220
2,500 ₱140

The price for which you sell x printed T-shirts is called the Price Function denoted as p(x)

The Price Function is 𝒑 ( 𝒙 )=−𝟎 . 𝟐 𝒙 +𝟔𝟒𝟎

The PRICE Function is categorized under FINANCIAL
functions. It will calculate the price of a bond per face
value that pays a periodic interest rate. In financial
analysis, the PRICE function can be useful when we
wish to borrow money by selling bonds instead of
stocks.
Types of a Linear Functions
1. Quadratic Function

2. Constant Function and Identity Function

3. Absolute Value Function

4. Piecewise Function

5. One-to-one Function
1. Quadratic Function
A Quadratic Function is any equation of the form

Where a, b, and c are real numbers and a 0.

The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola. Hence, the graph of is a
parabola. Parabolas are shaped like cups.
2. Constant Function and Identity Function
A Linear Function f is a Constant Function if f(x) = mx + b, where m = 0 and b
is a real number. Thus, f(x) = b
A Linear Function f is an Identity Function if f(x) = mx + b, where m = 1 and
b = 0. thus, f(x) = x
3. Absolute Value Function

The function f is an Absolute Value Function if for all real numbers X,

4. Piecewise Function
A Piecewise Function or a Compound Function is a function defined by multiple
subfunctions, where each subfunction applies to a certain interval of the main
function’s domain.
5. One-to-one Function
A One-to-one Function is a function in which for each value of y in the range of f,
there is just one value x in the domain of f such that y = f(x).
In other words, f is one-to-one if
Graphically, a one-to-one function can be easily identified using the horizontal
line test. A function is one-to-one if no horizontal line intersects its graph more
than once.
