PARTS OF A TYPHOON

SIR AL
PARTS OF A TYPHOON

GOALS
at the end of the 40-minute period, the students
should be able to:

1. characterize the wind speed and air

pressure in the different parts of a typhoon.;
2. sharpen their knowledge about the effects
of the eye and eyewall of the typhoon as it
passes through an area.; and

3. cite how landmasses and bodies of water

affect the typhoon.

2
ACTIVITY: “HIGH! LOW!
FAST OR SLOW? EYE TO
PARTS OF A TYPHOON

EYEWALL EFFECTS”

DIRECTIONS:
PART 1. Below is the figure of
Typhoon Formation with its
corresponding parts. Analyze the
figure, then answer the questions
3
that follow.
1. WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF TYPHOON?
2. WHAT DID YOU OBSERVE ABOUT ITS
MOVEMENT?
This figure shows the different parts of a typhoon and how it is form.
Location A is within the eye of a typhoon. B, C and D are locations that
are more distant from the eye.

a. Which among the four locations has the lowest air pressure?
b. Which among the four locations has the highest air pressure?

Which between the two locations has the higher wind speed?
1. When the eye of the typhoon passes over a certain place, it
is the winds at the eyewall that causes a lot of damage.

2. As it approaches, one side of the eyewall brings strong wind

blowing in one direction.

4. As it leaves, the other side of the eyewall brings strong

winds again but this time in the opposite direction.
Identify between the two pictures the possible effect of
typhoon’s eye and eyewall as it passes through a certain
area.
Which between the typhoon’s eye and eyewall caused
a lot of damage as it passes over a certain area/place?
Which part of the typhoon has the following
characteristics?
1. strong winds or heavy rainsEYE WALL
2. clear sky or calm EYE
weather
Do you know how important the
Sierra Madre Mountain Range in
the Philippines?
Do you know how important the Sierra Madre
Mountain Range in the Philippines?

This mountain range protects us against strong

typhoon and cause to weaken as its landfall to
certain area.
Typhoons gain energy from warm ocean water and
loses energy over cold water.
These are sustained by deep convection and
release of latent heat and so require warm
ocean water to sustain the convection and wind
speeds.
When typhoon is over the oceans, ships at sea can be
distress for several days. As it approaches and moves across
the coastline, it brings high waves or a large dome of water
from the sea, termed by meteorologists as “storm surge”.
When typhoons moving inland will considerably weaken or
even die out. They weaken because their source of energy –
water vapor from the ocean is removed.
