UNIT- III

THE TRANSISTOR
@
HIGH FREQUENCY

1
High frequency model of transistor
• When input signal to an amplifier is in the range of 10 to 100 KHz, a
small signal-low frequency model of the transistor can be used for analysis.

• The gain decreases at high frequencies due to internal feedback capacitance’s. The
highest frequency of operation of BJT will be limited by internal capacitance’s of BJT.

• The on and off switching times of BJT will be high and speed will be limited due to
internal charge storage effects.

• A low frequency model cannot work well in this situation.

• To accommodate these performance changes of the transistor, a separate model  is

developed for high frequency operations.

• A high frequency hybrid-pi model is  also known as Giacoletto model.

• This is a measure to denote the performance of an amplifier
circuit.
• Gain. Bandwidth product is also referred as Figure of Merit of an
amplifier.
• For certain amplifier circuits, the mid band gain Am maybe large,
but not Bandwidth or Vice - Versa. Different amplifier circuits can
be compared with thus parameter.
