THE ORIGIN OF CONGKAK
• Congkak is believed to originate from the African or Arab world. However, the
oldest evidence found by National Geographic Society which they found pieces
of limestone with two parallel pores. From the Middle East, the game spread to
Africa. Congkak spread to Asia through Arab traders.
• In Southeast Asia, congkak may have developed from Melaka as the state was a
center of trade in the past. The name "congkak" is believed to be derived from
the Malay word "congak" which means mental calculation. Apart from the
Malays, the descendants of Indians and Baba Melaka also enjoy the game of
Congkak.
HOW TO PLAY
• Two players play simultaneously to reach the fruit in their
respective villages and Both fruits one by one in the village
hole and the house hole.
• If the last fruit falls in his own house, the player can continue
the game. If the last fruit falls on the opponent's empty
village, then the game dies there only.
• Upon completion of the first round, each player replenishes
the village with congkak fruit.
• If there is a village that does not have enough fruit, it is
considered burnt and cannot be filled when playing the
second round and so on until the opponent admits defeat.
