The pink dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), also known as boto, bufeo,
Amazon dolphin or tonina, is an endangered species of odontocete
cetacean mammal of the IIniida family. It is also considered the
largest river dolphin; the weight of adult males reaches 185 kg
...
and they can measure up to 2.5 m. As a distinctive character,
adults acquire a pink color, more accentuated in males.
ROOM:The pink river dolphin is a solitary species, mothers
are generally found with their young, or maximum in
… groups of up to 4 individuals. The pink dolphin is widely
distributed between the Orinoco and Amazon river systems
of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.
It feeds on more than 50 different species of fish,
sometimes eating crabs, molluscs and freshwater
turtles. It is the only dolphin that has a flexible neck,
which can be moved from side to side, which is an

advantage when navigating through the trees in
flooded forests.
The males beat the surface water with branches and reeds, or hoist
live turtles as if they were trophies, to attract females.
In addition, the males fiercely attack each other, they can tear off
pieces of the snout and fins. …
Males covered with more scar tissue are the most attractive to
females, at least during the mating season. Copulation takes place
between both sexes joining belly to belly.
The gestation period is believed to last between nine to twelve
months. The females give birth when the Amazon River is at its
maximum level, between the months of May and July. Females give
birth to a single calf every two to three years and lactation lasts
more than a year.
ILLEGAL HUNTING
• Illegal and indiscriminate hunting, since for years its meat was used
as bait to catch some species of fish. Specifically, its meat was used
to catch the speck fish, a scavenger species that feeds on the remains
of dead animals, including illegally hunted pink dolphins, a practice
that still persists in some regions where it is distributed
HABITAT DESTRUCTION
• Another reason why pink dolphins are in danger of extinction is the
destruction of their habitat, since deforestation, especially in the
Brazilian Amazon, is reducing their extension in a very alarming way
every year. This has led to sectors of the river where they are located
being destroyed. In addition, the traffic in them has caused the death
of curious dolphins that approach the boats due to the propellers,
added to the noise pollution that it means for these animals.
-Avoid polluting the river where they live.
-Collaborate with entities dedicated to the care of these animals
in danger of extinction.
-Be a responsible tourist.
