DANGER OF EXTINCTION
NAME: BEATRIZ JACHO LLAVILLA
DEFINITION

This creature is among the animals in danger of extinction, it is called a

pink dolphin, it is friendly, social and curious by nature. It is the most
intelligent of all species of river dolphins.

CHARACTERISTICS

 It is a cetacean mammal that lives in the rivers of the Peruvian

Amazon.
 It is friendly, sociable and curious by nature.
 They can measure up to 2.5 meters long and weigh up to 200 kg.
 They are almost blind due to the murky waters in which they navigate.
 It is the largest and most intelligent of the 5 species that live in rivers.
 It tends to be solitary and is not often seen in groups.

NATURAL HABITAT

 They inhabit the main tributaries of the Amazon, Orinoco

and Madeira rivers. The Amazon pink dolphin can be found
in almost all the main rivers, canals and rapid waterfalls.
 They are not only apt to live in the water but also in large
amounts of flooded forest in the rainy season, they can be
found in small formations of lakes that connect with rivers,
waterfalls or prominent waterfalls at the mouth of rivers.

MAIN FUNCTION IN THE ECOSYSTEM

 It fulfills an important function in the ecological balance

since it helps to control the population of piranhas and
other fish that could become a threat due to
overpopulation.
 If the dolphins did not fulfill this regulatory function,
several problems would occur in the ecosystem.
THREATS

 The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified

the Amazon River dolphin as an endangered species, generally due to:
 Massive destruction of the Amazon rainforest has put them in danger
on several occasions, as has fishing and accelerated felling of trees.
 Contamination of rivers by mercury caused by mining.
 Killing by the fishermen because they break the fishing nets.
 Hunting of the species for the use of its meat and fat as a grenade.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT ITS EXTINCTION?

 Social campaigns to raise awareness among human beings about the

care of the Amazon rivers.
 Raise awareness among contacts (family, friends) about the possible
extinction by raising awareness through triptych infographic videos
and through direct dialogue.
