WHAT IS AGRICULTURE?

• AGRICULTURE IS THE SCIENCE OF PRACTICING:

CULTIVATING THE SOIL PRODUCING CROPS REARING LIVESTOCK

The word agriculture is made up of two words ager(field) and culture(art of cultivation).
• Agriculture includes growing crops , vegetables, fruits ,flowers (horticulture) and cattle rearing.
• Farming includes growing plants and crops.

Beginning of Agriculture :

Agriculture was the greatest discovery of Neolethic age.

Early humans led a nomadic life style by hunting and gathering food ,mostly in the forest.
With time they learnt to domesticate animals and grow crops. Now they became food
gatherer to food producer. They used primitive tools such as hoe and sickle ,were initially
used . With the passage of time the need to produce more crops by using modern means of
farming such as machines, fertiliser , pesticides and irrigation facilities.
GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR FARMING
CLIMATE

TEMPERATURE AND RAIN FALL CONDITIONS

INFLUENCE THE CULTIVATION OF CROPS.

A. HOT AND HUMID LAND

B. COOL AND DRY PLACE
C. VERY DRY AND VERY COLD CONDITION
D. GREEN HOUSE
SOIL

ALLUVIAL SOIL- EXTREMLY FERTILE SOIL

CHERNOZEM SOIL- IN RUSSIA ,EXTREMLY FERTILE AS IT IS RICH IN HUMUS
TERRA ROXA SOIL: IN BRAZIL , EXCELLENT FOR GROWING COFFEE

LATERITE SOIL: SOIL IDEAL FOR GROWING TEA

TOPOGRAPHY:
Topography is the study of the land surface. In particular, it lays the underlying foundation of a
landscape. For example, topography refers to mountains, valleys, rivers, or craters on the surface. ...
The narrow definition of topography is specific to the arrangement of landforms.
Topography is one of the most obvious causes of variation found in field crops both for its direct effect on micro-
climate and for related soil fac- tors such as soil temperature, which influences germination, tiller production and
crop growth.
1.PLAINS-levelled landscape always helps in ploughing ,irrigating and harvesting crops.
• China
• The United States
• Brazil.
• India. ...
• Russia. ...
• France. ...
• Mexico. ...
• Japan.
• Germany
• Turkey
2. Hill slopes; the crops such as tea , coffee grow better on hill slopes as they cannot withstand
stagnant water at the base of the plants.

3.Terrace Cultivation: broad steps have to be cut on high lands such as mountains slopes to get
the flat terrain required for cultivation of rice crops. This is known as terrace cultivation.
