Introduction
A smart helmet is a type of protective headgear used by the rider which makes bike driving safer than before.
The main purpose of this helmet is to provide safety for the rider. In this project an implementation has been
done on the field of Internet of Things (IoT). The alcohol sensor mentioned in the project has been utilized to
detect the alcohol density surrounding the mouth of the rider who is under intoxication. The obtained
information will be sent to the microcontroller NODEMCU-ESP8266, from the alcohol sensor through the A0
(analog output) pin. The microcontroller receives the data through its A0 (analog read) pin and the obtained data
will be transferred through the internet by utilizing its WiFi module, to a website, where the data can be further
processed.

Project objective

The main objective of this project is to

build a safety system which is integrated
with a smart helmet to reduce the
probability of two-wheeler accidents and
drunk drive cases.

Equipments used

Alcohol sensor (MQ3) Connecting wires

NodeMCU ESP8266

9V battery

Breadboard
Alcohol sensor
01
It is a gas sensor which detects content gas concentration
from 0.05 mg/L to 10 mg/L. It is highly sensitive to alcohol
and a low cost semiconductor sensor which provides fast
response and gives both digital and analog output.
NodeMCU WIFI module
03
NodeMCU is a low-cost open source IoT platform. It
includes a firmware which runs on the ESP8266 WIFI
System on a chip (SoC) from Espressif Systems. It specifies a
Wi-Fi module for communication between two nodes,
which is based on ESP-12 module. NodeMCU can store
more code compared to Arduino UNO. It plays a major part
in communication platform.
The NODEMCU-ESP8266 microcontroller is connected to the alcohol
sensor, switch and battery through a breadboard using connecting wires.
Working process For the microcontroller to function, it is connected to a laptop through a
USB cable to upload the program to the microcontroller. The SSID name
and password is uploaded in the program for obtaining internet
connectivity. For transferring the information from the microcontroller to a
website, the channel name and key is also uploaded to the program.

The motorcycle riders are initially tested whether they have worn their
helmet before riding the motorcycle. Then, if the rider is intoxicated, the
alcohol sensor obtains the density of alcohol surrounding the rider’s
mouth. This data is sent from the alcohol sensor to the microcontroller,
which sends it to a website. On the website, the output is represented as
an analog plot of time and sensor reading in ppm (parts per million). If the
alcohol concentration in ppm reaches beyond a certain value, it refers that
the motorcycle rider is intoxicated.

Limitation
The alcohol detector due to being fragile and expensive is one of the biggest hurdles in the path of mass
implementation of smart helmets. Due to this reason, the maintenance cost of the helmet is going to be high, not
only that, the regular servicing will generate public annoyance. Primary goal of smart helmet is to prevent the
accidents caused due to drunk driving , but the root cause of drink and drive cases are some irresponsible people
who doesn't care either about their or the victims life . It cannot be expected from them to put on the helmet,
due to which it will make the primary goal of this device meaningless.

Conclusion
This project demonstrates a simple electronic circuit that can be implemented in a helmet to avoid accidents
caused due to drink and driving and the helmet is called as a smart helmet. The circuit should be designed by
using the concept of IoT technology in order to reduce the number of accidents in two-wheelers. The only
drawback of this project is that if the person does not wear the helmet then the process cannot be implemented,
however, in future our team will work on this project and by adding more number of sensors, this drawback will
be removed. Our project provides a future vision of a helmet that will act as a virtual policeman keeping the
drivers in check and making the roads safer.
Future scope

As a future scope of this project, the helmet will

be equipped with a GPS module that will be
used to detect the live location of the
motorcycle rider and a proximity sensor will be
used to detect the possibility of accidents with
the motorcycle.
